2023 Preview | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
LaFayette finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 2-7 record. Last year LaFayette finished sixth in Class 2A region three with a 2-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. LaFayette took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2014. The Bulldogs lost as many games as in any season since 2014. The Bulldogs hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just two games which followed a 7-4 record in 2021. Since 2010, LaFayette has gone a combined 70-69. Their 50.4% winning percentage ranks 27th in Class 2A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, LaFayette has managed to compile a record of 132-132. Their 50.0% winning percentage ranks 22nd in Class 2A and 189th in the AHSAA. The Bulldogs are led by head coach Juan Williams who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 14-16 over the past three seasons at LaFayette. Under his direction the Bulldogs have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Williams. Over the course of his career, Coach Williams' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times and won one region championship. Is this the last season for LaFayette football? They are scheduled to consolidate with Valley prior to the beginning of the school year in 2024. Their outlook this year is just to be better than last year. Coach Williams plans to rotate quarterbacks during the games as each will bring a different skill set to the game. The Bulldogs have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 2A. Their opponents had a combined record of 55-44 last season. That ranks 8th in Class 2A and 73rd in the AHSAA. The Bulldogs will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region three this season. After just 2 wins last year, LaFayette will be hoping to become more competitive in the region. The Bulldogs open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Loachapoka on Saturday, August 26 at Loachapoka Stadium. Last year the Loachapoka Indians finished with an overall record of 9-2 and in second place in Class 1A region four. The Indians lost in the second round of the Class 1A playoffs to Millry by a score of 63-12. LaFayette and Loachapoka have met a total of 23 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 12-11-0 record against the Indians. They last met in 2022 with Loachapoka winning by a score of 38-6. The Bulldogs return 2A All-State Junior receiver Joshua Bledsoe. He was named to the second team last season. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
