2023 Preview | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Muscle Shoals completed the 2022 season with a 11-2 record. With their 4-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 6A region seven, the Trojans earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Muscle Shoals made a nice playoff run in 2022, reaching the semi-finals before falling to a very good Mountain Brook team by the score of 28-7. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Muscle Shoals has gone a combined 127-34. Their 78.9% winning percentage ranks 5th in Class 6A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Muscle Shoals has managed to compile a record of 177-108. Their 62.0% winning percentage ranks 15th in Class 6A and 83rd in the AHSAA. Their last losing season was 2008. The Trojans are led by head coach Scott Basden who is entering his sixteenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 138-45 over the past fifteen seasons at Muscle Shoals. Under his direction the Trojans have qualified for the playoffs a total of fourteen times. They have won five region crowns with Coach Basden. His 207 wins rank 17th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Basden's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty-one times and won eight region championships. He has a 35-20 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches. Coach Basden won a state championship at Cordova in 2007. The Trojans have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 6A. Their opponents had a combined record of 55-42 last season. That ranks 8th in Class 6A and 53rd in the AHSAA. The Trojans should be in contention for a playoff spot in region seven this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage. They have reached the playoffs every year since 2008 and will once again be in the hunt for a spot in 2023. The Trojans open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Bob Jones on Thursday, August 24 at J.F. Moore Stadium. Last year the Bob Jones Patriots finished with an overall record of 5-6 and in fourth place in Class 7A region four. The Patriots lost in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs to Hoover by a score of 45-19. Muscle Shoals and Bob Jones have met a total of 5 times on the football field. The Trojans have a 4-1-0 record against the Patriots. They last met in 2022 with Muscle Shoals winning by a score of 31-7. Muscle Shoals lost 6A All-State kicker Trey Stoddard to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating were teammates defensive lineman Jyheam Ingram and punter Sam Wright. The Trojans return 6A All-State Senior defensive back Xavier Johnson. He was named to the first team last season. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
