2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Shelby County finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Shelby County just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 5A region three with a 1-4 region record. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Shelby County averaged scoring just 11.0 points a game. Since 2010, the Shelby County football program has struggled with a record of 42-88. Over the past 25 seasons, Shelby County has managed to compile a record of 122-141. Their 46.0% winning percentage ranks 30th in Class 5A and 223rd in the AHSAA. The Wildcats are led by head coach Zeb Ellison who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 8-12 over the past two seasons at Shelby County. Under his direction the Wildcats have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Ellison. Over the course of his career, Coach Ellison's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times . The Wildcats enter the 2023 season in the middle of a 6 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. The Wildcats could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region three this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Shelby County came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year. The Wildcats open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent West Blocton on Friday, August 25 at Tiger Field. Last year the West Blocton Tigers finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in third place in Class 4A region three. The Tigers lost in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs to Handley by a score of 46-6. Shelby County and West Blocton have met a total of 21 times on the football field. The Wildcats have a 6-14-1 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2022 with Shelby County winning by a score of 14-7. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
