2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
St. Michael completed the 2022 season with a 5-5 record. Last year St. Michael just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 4A region one with a 4-3 region record. The Cardinals have never qualified for a playoff spot and would love to break that streak this season. The Cardinals have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2023. St. Michael is a relatively new football program having fielded a team only six seasons. They have managed a record of 16-33 over the past six years. The Cardinals are led by head coach Phillip Rivers who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 11-8 over the past two seasons at St. Michael. The Cardinals have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Rivers. The Cardinals could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region one this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. St. Michael has never qualified for one of the coveted playoffs spots in school history but hope to turn a few more wins into a post season appearance this season. The Cardinals open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Gulf Shores on Thursday, August 24 at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium. Last year the Gulf Shores Dolphins finished with an overall record of 11-2 and in second place in Class 5A region one. The Dolphins lost in the quarter-finals round of the Class 5A playoffs to Faith Academy by a score of 20-14. St. Michael and Gulf Shores have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Cardinals have a 0-2-0 record against the Dolphins. They last met in 2022 with Gulf Shores winning by a score of 34-27. St. Michael lost 4A All-State linebacker Clay Barr to graduation. He was named to the second team last season. Also graduating was teammate linebacker Tyler Cella. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
