2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
West Morgan completed the 2022 season with a 10-2 record. With their 6-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 4A region seven, the Rebels earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. West Morgan reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Cherokee County by a score of 42-28. The 500 points scored by the Rebels last year were a team record in a single season. It marked the first time since the 2017 season that the Rebels qualified for the playoffs. The Rebels hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Phillips saw improvement as they won ten games following a 5-5 record in 2021. The high-scoring West Morgan offense ranked 16th in the AHSAA. They averaged 41.7 points a game. The Rebels defense dominated most opponents as they ranked 17th in the AHSAA. The defense gave up just 12.9 points a game. Since 2010, West Morgan has gone a combined 50-85. Their 37.0% winning percentage ranks 46th in Class 4A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, West Morgan has managed to compile a record of 144-128. Their 53.0% winning percentage ranks 21st in Class 4A and 162nd in the AHSAA. The Rebels are led by head coach Drew Phillips who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 15-7 over the past two seasons at West Morgan. Under his direction the Rebels have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Phillips. RB Jalen Fletcher, QB Braxton Peters and athlete JaMaury Burgess will all be returning this fall. Coach Phillips is expecting an even better year than the 10-2 record his team posted in 2022. He thinks if they can limit mistakes they will make a push towards a trip to the Super Seven come December. West Morgan enters the 2023 season with a string of 9 consecutive wins on their home field at Rebels Stadium. The Rebels should be in contention for a playoff spot in region seven this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage. Jalen Fletcher ran for 1,457 yards and 17 touchdowns. He caught 30 passes and had four receiving TDs. Returned two punts and one kickoff for scores. Junior Ty Jones averaged 11.2 tackles per game and was leading tackler for the No. 2 ranked scoring defense in Class 4A. The Rebels open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Randolph on Friday, August 25 at SportsMed Field. Last year the Randolph Raiders finished with an overall record of 10-3 and in second place in Class 4A region eight. The Raiders lost in the quarter-finals round of the Class 4A playoffs to Cherokee County by a score of 35-21. West Morgan and Randolph have met a total of 5 times on the football field. The Rebels have a 3-2-0 record against the Raiders. They last met in 2022 with West Morgan winning by a score of 41-21. West Morgan lost 4A All-State offensive lineman Eli Bice to graduation. He was named to the second team last season. The Rebels return 4A All-State Senior running back Jalen Fletcher. He was named to the second team last season. The Rebels also return Junior linebacker Ty Jones. He was named to the honorable mention team. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
