2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Westbrook Christian completed the 2022 season with a 5-5 record. Last year Westbrook Christian finished seventh in Class 3A region six with a 2-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Warriors had some tough luck last season as three of their five losses were by less than eight points. Since 2010, Westbrook Christian has gone a combined 75-62. Their 54.7% winning percentage ranks 25th in Class 3A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Westbrook Christian has managed to compile a record of 146-122. Their 54.0% winning percentage ranks 27th in Class 3A and 145th in the AHSAA. The Warriors will be under the direction of new head football coach Steve Smith as they enter the 2023 season. Coach Smith arrives at Westbrook Christian after a great career at Piedmont where his teams won five state championships. His 283 wins rank 7th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Smith's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty-seven times and won sixteen region championships. He has a 62-22 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches. Coach Smith won five state championships prior to arriving at Westbrook Christian, the last coming in 2021 at Piedmont. New facilities and a new attitude at Westbrook Christian in Coach Smiths initial season could be just what the program needs to be successful in the future. The Warriors could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region six this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Westbrook Christian missed the playoffs the past couple of seasons but hope to return to the post season in 2023. The Warriors open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent St. John Paul II on Friday, August 25 at Jack Osborn Stadium. Last year the St. John Paul II Falcons finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in fifth place in Class 4A region eight. The Falcons ended last season on a positive note with a win over Elkmont by a score of 42-14 after failing to gain a playoff spot. This will be the second meeting between Westbrook Christian and St. John Paul II on the football field. The Warriors have a 1-0-0 record against the Falcons.
