2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Woodlawn completed the 2022 season with a 6-4 record. Last year Woodlawn finished sixth in Class 6A region five with a 2-4 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Colonels improved in 2022 with their first winning season since 2011. The Colonels won as many games as in any season since 2011. The Colonels have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2011 season and would love to end that streak this year. The Colonels last playoff victory came during the 1994 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. The Colonels hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Williams saw improvement as they won six games following a 1-9 record in 2021. Woodlawn was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Colonels want to be competitive. They only averaged 17.2 points a game. Since 2010, the Woodlawn football program has struggled with a record of 28-103. Over the past 25 seasons, Woodlawn has not won much with a record of 55-194. Their 22.0% winning percentage ranks 56th in Class 6A and 384th in the AHSAA. The Colonels have struggled on the football field with only three winning seasons during this time. The Colonels will be under the direction of new head football coach Clarence Williams as they enter the 2023 season. Coach Williams gets his first shot as a head football coach in 2023 at Woodlawn. The Colonels are on their eighth head coach since 2013. Not a good formula to build a winning program. Coach Williams plans to use a two quarterback system when the season opens hoping for more production on that side of the ball. Woodlawn will only return four seniors to an already short roster. The Colonels will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region five this season. Unfortunately, Woodlawn finds themselves in a very competitive region with other playoff quality teams. They may need to pull off an upset or two to have any shot at the postseason. The Colonels open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Bessemer City on Friday, August 25 at Bessemer City Stadium. Last year the Bessemer City Purple Tigers finished with an overall record of 1-9 and in eighth place in Class 6A region four. Woodlawn and Bessemer City have met a total of 48 times on the football field. The Colonels have a 16-29-3 record against the Purple Tigers. They last met in 2022 with Woodlawn winning by a score of 18-15. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
