2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Billingsley finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Billingsley finished sixth in Class 1A region four with a 2-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Bears lost as many games as in any season since 2000. Billingsley struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 36.3 points a game. Since 2010, Billingsley has gone a combined 73-79. Their 48.0% winning percentage ranks 26th in Class 1A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Billingsley has managed to compile a record of 126-143. Their 47.0% winning percentage ranks 27th in Class 1A and 220th in the AHSAA. Head Coach: The Bears are led by head coach Lanny Jones who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 5-15 over the past two seasons at Billingsley. The Bears have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Jones. Over the course of his career, Coach Jones' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times . Season Outlook: The Billingsley Bears will play in Class 1A region four during the 2024 season. The Bears enter the 2024 season in the middle of a 6 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. The Bears have missed the playoffs the past two seasons but Coach Jones likes this team's chances of getting back to the playoffs in 2024. They return seven players on offense and five on defense when fall practice begins in August. Several newcomers to the football program will be counted on to contribute especially on defense. Coach Lanny Jones told us about this year's team ''We are excited for the 2024 season. With us returning our Top 3 Offensive Production Players (QB - Landon Jones, WR - Kyle Boice, RB - Kaden Cotton) and 4 of our OL for their 3rd season, we expect to perform well on the Offensive side of the ball. We are a well experienced team on offense but will have a lot of new faces on the defensive side. We just want to play with a lot of effort and be physical.'' The Bears could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region four this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Billingsley missed the playoffs the past couple of seasons but hope to return to the post season in 2024. Players to Watch in 2024: QB Landon Jones will be returning for his senior season after completing 117-of-187 passes for 1,805 yards and 21 TDs last season. Jones added 677 yards on the ground and scored 9 touchdowns. RB Kaden Cotton will also return after rushing for 774 yards and 4 TDs as a sophomore in 2023. Returning Starters: OFFENSE: QB- Landon Jones, WR- Kyle Boice, RB- Kaden Cotton, OT- Danny Boice, OG- Gabe Cardenas, OG- Lane Plott, C- Jake Rawlinson DEFENSE: CB- Kyle Boice, LB- Landon Jones, DE- Danny Boice, DE- Gabe Cardenas, DT- Jonathan Teems NEWCOMERS: OT/MLB- Talon McClendon, LB- Wyatt Longcrier, WR- Jaylen Cutler, CB- Calvin Thomas Season Opener: The Bears open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Greensboro on Friday, August 23 at Robert Lucky Stadium. Last year the Greensboro Raiders finished with an overall record of 1-9 and in seventh place in Class 3A region three. This will be the second meeting between Billingsley and Greensboro on the football field. The Bears have a 1-0-0 record against the Raiders.
