 2024 Preview

Hoover completed the 2023 season with a 5-7 record. With their 4-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 7A region three, the Buccaneers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Hoover reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Hewitt-Trussville by a score of 40-7.

Hoover took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 1998. The Buccaneers lost as many games as in any season since 1997. The Buccaneers hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just five games which followed a 11-2 record in 2022.

As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Hoover has gone a combined 160-32. Their 83.3% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class 7A over the past fourteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Hoover has finished a combined 297-51. Their 85.0% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class 7A and 2nd in the AHSAA. The Buccaneers have been successful on the football field with twenty-four winning seasons during this time.

Graduated All-State Players:
Hoover lost 7A All-State  linebacker Bradley Shaw to graduation. He was named to the first team last season.

Coaching Change:
Wade Waldrop  leaves the Hoover Bucs after just two seasons leading the prestigious football program with a record of 16-9. While his first team finished 11-2 and won a region crown before losing to Thompson in the semifinals, his last squad only managed to go 5-7 with a very difficult schedule.

Overall in 18 seasons as a head football coach in the state his teams have a combined record of 116-84 and 7-13 in the playoffs. It seems that maybe the competition has caught up to the Bucs in recent years and their hopes are a new head man on the sidelines will bring back the glory days of Rush Propst and Josh Niblett.

2024 Head Coach:
Drew Gilmer  leaves Clay-Chalkville after seven very successful seasons. His 2021 and 2023 teams finished with undefeated seasons and a state championship. Each of his teams qualified for the playoffs and all but one (2022) reached the third round of the playoffs. His 81-12 record is nothing short of amazing in his first eight seasons as a head football coach. Over the course of his career, Coach Gilmer's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of seven times and won three region championships. Coach Gilmer won two state championships prior to arriving at Hoover, the last coming in 2023 at Clay-Chalkville.

Season Outlook:

The Hoover Buccaneers will play in Class 7A region three during the 2024 season.

The Buccaneers have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 7A. Their opponents had a combined record of 78-40 last season. That ranks 1st in Class 7A and 7th in the AHSAA.

A losing season at Hoover is something that has not happened since 1998 long before any of the current players were even born. It is totally unacceptable in Hoover by standards that were set many years ago.

So what do they do to right the ship? Well first off they went out and hired Drew Gilmer who directed Clay-Chalkville to a perfect 14-0 record and the 6A state championship last season.

The talent pool seems to have dwindled a little since the glory days for the Bucs but if any coach can quickly turn this thing around it will be Drew Gilmer. The defense will be much improved with linebackers Trey Sanders and Cam Torbor leading the way. The offense will be led by transfer QB Mac Beason from Gardendale.

The Buccaneers should be in contention for a playoff spot in region three this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage. They have reached the playoffs every year since 1999 and will once again be in the hunt for a spot in 2024.

Players to Watch in 2024:
QB Mac Beason transferred from Gardendale after completing 159-of-272 passes for 2,089 yards and 28 TDs last season. He added another 368 yards and 4 TDs rushing.

Returning Starters:
ATH Jonah Winston, Jamar Moultrie, DL Tyson Bacon, DB/ATH Tre Darden, OLB Dylan Bunkley, ATH Christopher Warren, C/OG Storm Fain, DT/TE PaLanding Drammeh, OL Toby Richard, DE Darien Carlisle

Season Opener:
The Buccaneers open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Western FL on Saturday, August 24.

This will be the second meeting between Hoover and Western FL on the football field. The Buccaneers have a 1-0-0 record against Western FL. They last met in with
