2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Mortimer Jordan completed the 2023 season with a 8-3 record. With their 4-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 6A region five, the Blue Devils earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Mortimer Jordan's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Fort Payne by a score of 45-28. The Blue Devils improved in 2023 with their first winning season since 2019. It marked the first time since the 2019 season that the Blue Devils qualified for the playoffs. The Blue Devils hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Lauderdale saw improvement as they won eight games following a 2-8 record in 2022. Since 2010, Mortimer Jordan has gone a combined 95-68. Their 58.3% winning percentage ranks 22nd in Class 6A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Mortimer Jordan has managed to compile a record of 161-120. Their 57.0% winning percentage ranks 23rd in Class 6A and 105th in the AHSAA. Graduated All-State Players: Mortimer Jordan lost 6A All-State receiver Coleman Maldonado to graduation. He was named to the honorable mention team last season. Coaching Change: Dustan Goode stepped down as the head coach at Mortimer Jordan after a dozen seasons at the school. He leaves as the coach with the most wins at the school in their history. He also led the Blue Devils to some of the best seasons in their history including a spot in the 2015 state championship game against St. Paul's. He leaves with a record of 80-41 for the Blue Devils and eight trips to the playoffs. 2024 Head Coach: Heath Lauderdale was promoted to the the head coaching job in May for the Blue Devils. Lauderdale has been the assistant head coach the past two seasons at the school. He has 16 years of coaching experience, including a five-year stint as the head coach at Susan Moore where his teams finished 31-22 between 2017-2021. His 2019 team completed a perfect 10-0 regular season before finishing with a record of 11-1. Over the course of his career, Coach Lauderdale's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times and won one region championship. Season Outlook: The Mortimer Jordan Blue Devils will play in Class 6A region five during the 2024 season. Mortimer Jordan enters the 2024 season with a string of 6 consecutive wins on their home field at Jimmie Trotter Field. QB Garrett Ames (1,911 yards) and WR Coleman Maldonado (1,033 yards) graduated in May. Coach Dustan Goode retired from the high school football sidelines so there will be a few changes coming in Kimberly this fall. The eight wins last year were more than the previous three seasons combined. This season the Blue Devils will face seven teams that qualified for the playoffs last year. Their non-region schedule includes Leeds, Cullman, Fort Payne and Hartselle. All were playoff teams last year and all are quality football programs. Mortimer Jordan will count on a group of younger players to step up this fall and fill some positions on both sides of the football if they hope to continue the success of last season. Coach Lauderdale told us about his Blue Devils in 2024. ''Young, hard working group with a sprinkle of veteran returners that can lead. Tough region and non region schedule to be navigated. Need to stay healthy.'' The Blue Devils should be in contention for a playoff spot in region five this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage. Returning Starters: OFFENSE: Robbie Adams; Parker Reno; Camarion White; WR- Daunte Williams DEFENSE: Daunte Williams; Gavin Friese; Jackson Gohn; Caden Todoroff NEWCOMERS: Micah Gatson; Weston Tossie; Jacob Cawley; Josh Roper; Cruz Boyd; Tanner Rice; Levi Madrid; Blaze Neely Season Opener: The Blue Devils open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Leeds on Friday, August 23 at Jimmie Trotter Field. Last year the Leeds Greenwave finished with an overall record of 9-3 and in second place in Class 5A region six. The Greenwave lost in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs to Ramsay by a score of 42-7. Mortimer Jordan and Leeds have met a total of 47 times on the football field. The Blue Devils have a 8-38-1 record against the Greenwave.
