2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
North Sand Mountain completed the 2023 season with a 5-6 record. With their 4-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 2A region seven, the Bison earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. North Sand Mountain's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Locust Fork by a score of 54-7. North Sand Mountain struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 35.4 points a game. Since 2010, North Sand Mountain has gone a combined 93-65. Their 58.9% winning percentage ranks 14th in Class 2A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, North Sand Mountain has managed to compile a record of 119-149. Their 44.0% winning percentage ranks 33rd in Class 2A and 222nd in the AHSAA. Coaching Change: Keith Kirby stepped down as the head football coach in November after leading the Bison for the last eight seasons. His record with the program was 55-37 and 4-8 in the playoffs. He leaves as the winningest coach ever at the school and won more playoff games than any previous head coach. 2024 Head Coach: Jay Lipscomb graduated from Springville High School in 2013 and UAB before embarking on his coaching career. He served as the Defensive Coordinator at Clarke County High School the past two seasons before heading back north to take over the head coaching duties at North Sand Mountain. Season Outlook: The North Sand Mountain Bison will play in Class 2A region seven during the 2024 season. The Bison will be without the services of the winningest coach in school history as Keith Kirby moved on to administration over the winter. Jay Lipscomb will come in and and be looking to build on last year's 5-6 record. They have a good group of players out for summer workouts and will open the season at Woodville on Aug. 23. The Bison have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region seven this season. They have qualified for the playoffs every year since 2014 and are hopeful to continue that streak in 2024. Returning Starters: WR/OLB Kade Davis, WR/SS Duncan Wilks, QB/S Landon Keller Season Opener: The Bison open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Woodville on Friday, August 23 at Frazier Field. Last year the Woodville Panthers finished with an overall record of 6-4 and in sixth place in Class 1A region seven. The Panthers ended last season on a positive note with a win over Asbury by a score of 51-7 after failing to gain a playoff spot. North Sand Mountain and Woodville have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Bison have a 4-0-0 record against the Panthers. They last met in 2020 with North Sand Mountain winning by a score of 34-6. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
