 2024 Preview 


       Southside completed the 2023 season with a 7-4 record. With their 3-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 3A region three, the Panthers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Southside's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Straughn by a score of 45-14.

       The Panthers last playoff victory came during the 2003 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win.

       Since 2010, Southside has gone a combined 61-85. Their 41.8% winning percentage ranks 41st in Class 3A over the past fourteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Southside has managed to compile a record of 105-154. Their 40.0% winning percentage ranks 44th in Class 3A and 276th in the AHSAA.

Graduated All-State Players:
       Southside lost 3A All-State  quarterback MJ Reese to graduation. He was named to the honorable mention team last season.

Head Coach:
       The Panthers are led by head coach Charles Moody Jr. who is entering his sixth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 33-21 over the past five seasons at Southside. Under his direction the Panthers have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Moody Jr.. Over the course of his career, Coach Moody Jr.'s teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of nine times .

Season Outlook:

       The Southside Panthers will play in Class 3A region three during the 2024 season.

      

       The Panthers lost starting quarterback MJ Reese to graduation and the 3,199 yards he threw for last season. Finding a replacement will be goal number one at Southside. Coach Moody does have a great cast of skilled players returning in 2024 to help alleviate that loss. They are led by the three Smiths, Derick, Erick and Amadrion.

       Only two opponents on the Panther's 2024 schedule qualified for the playoffs last season.

       This should be a fun team to watch in 2024 as the offense will score a ton of points and the skilled players will make every game interesting. Twenty-eight wins the past four seasons are the most for any Southside team during any four year period in school history.

    The Panthers should be in contention for a playoff spot in region three this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage.

Players to Watch in 2024:
      WR/RB Derick Smith will be back after rushing for 1,036 yards and 9 TDs last season. He also caught 46 passes for 1,487 yards and another 14 touchdowns in 2023.

      RB Amadrion Smith will be back after rushing for 728 yards and 4 TDs last season. WR Erick Smith will be returning for his senior season after catching 39 passes for 1,333 yards and 11 touchdowns.

      LB Jaibrien Gresham had 56 tackles on defense and will be back for his junior season.

Season Opener:
       The Panthers open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Selma on Friday, August 30 at Memorial Stadium. Last year the Selma Saints finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in fifth place in Class 5A region three.

       Southside and Selma have met a total of 42 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 9-33-0 record against the Saints. They last met in 2023 with Southside winning by a score of 22-8.

  


Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

Hazlewood won five consecutive state championships from 1988-1992. During this span the Golden Bears won 29 playoff games in a row.
