2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Selma finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Selma just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 5A region three with a 2-3 region record. The Saints lost as many games as in any season since 2016. The Saints hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just two games which followed a 7-4 record in 2022. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Selma averaged scoring just 9.8 points a game. Since 2010, Selma has gone a combined 66-81. Their 44.9% winning percentage ranks 29th in Class 5A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Selma has managed to compile a record of 108-146. Their 42.0% winning percentage ranks 39th in Class 5A and 270th in the AHSAA. Head Coach: The Saints are led by head coach Leon Day who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 2-8 record in his first season at Selma. The Saints have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Day. Season Outlook: The Selma Saints will play in Class 5A region three during the 2024 season. The Saints finished a disappointing 2-8 last year after posting a promising 7-4 record the previous season. What went wrong? Mainly the offense that only scored 98 points during the ten game schedule just could not get going. Even with a 2-8 record the Saints had a shot at the playoffs but lost out on a tiebreaker with Shelby County and Marbury who were also 2-8 during the regular season. This year will see their playoff chance diminished with the addition of Montevallo, Northside and Sipsey Valley to the region. The Saints will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region three this season. After just 2 wins last year, Selma will be hoping to become more competitive in the region. Players to Watch in 2024: QB Samarion Woods will be back for his senior season after completing 50-of-124 passes for 761 yards and 5 TDs last season. Also back will be Safety Kendarious White who collected 82 tackles (56 solo) and 3 sacks as a junior. Returning Starters: RB Desmeon Conner, WR Jarvarius Marks, WR Omari Smith, RB Desmeon Conner Season Opener: The Saints open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Park Crossing on Friday, August 23 at Memorial Stadium. Last year the Park Crossing Thunderbirds finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in seventh place in Class 6A region two. Selma and Park Crossing have met a total of 3 times on the football field. The Saints have a 2-1-0 record against the Thunderbirds. They last met in 2023 with Park Crossing winning by a score of 6-0. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
