 2024 Preview

Vestavia Hills completed the 2023 season with a 9-3 record. With their 5-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 7A region three, the Rebels earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Vestavia Hills reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Thompson by a score of 34-14.

The Rebels won as many games as in any season since 2015.

The defense was very stingy last season as Vestavia Hills ranked 32nd in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 14.4 points a game.

Since 2010, Vestavia Hills has gone a combined 95-63. Their 60.1% winning percentage ranks 14th in Class 7A over the past fourteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Vestavia Hills has managed to compile a record of 190-99. Their 66.0% winning percentage ranks 7th in Class 7A and 55th in the AHSAA. The Rebels have been successful on the football field with twenty-one winning seasons during this time.

Graduated All-State Players:
Vestavia Hills lost 7A All-State  defensive lineman Jordan Ross to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating was teammate athlete John Paul Head.

Head Coach:
The Rebels are led by head coach Robert Evans who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 16-8 over the past two seasons at Vestavia Hills. Under his direction the Rebels have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Evans.

Season Outlook:

The Vestavia Hills Rebels will play in Class 7A region three during the 2024 season.

The Rebels have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 7A. Their opponents had a combined record of 76-42 last season. That ranks 3rd in Class 7A and 16th in the AHSAA.

The loss of John Paul Head at QB to graduation will be difficult to replace for the Rebels.

In 2024 the Rebels will face seven teams that qualified for the playoffs last year. Their first five games are against Carver, Auburn, Hewitt-Trussville, Hillcrest and Thompson. That is a brutal schedule and the toughest stretch for any team in the state.

Coach Evans told us ''We will have a quality football team, but also the toughest schedule in the state. We have arguably 6 of the Top 10 Teams in the state on our schedule and a much improved Carver Team loaded with prospects. If we can just get in the playoffs out of our region and be healthy at the end of the year, we'll be a tough out. Just like the last 2 years.''

The Rebels should be in contention for a playoff spot in region three this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage.

Players to Watch in 2024:
William Tonsmeire returns at RB after rushing for 842 yards and 4 TDs as a junior last season.

Jacob Watson will lead the defense after collecting 68 tackles (49 solo) last season as a junior.

Returning Starters:
OFFENSE: JD Livingston- G, Caleb Boylan- C, Landon Page- G, William Tonsmeire- RB, Bruce Littleton- TE
DEFENSE: Grayson Bruno- LB, Jacob Watson- LB, William Plaisance- DE, Spence Hanna- S, Owen Simpson- Kicker, Punter
NEWCOMERS: QB- Charlie Taffe, So.; WR- Chase Webb, SR.; WR- Luke Stubbs, So.; LB- Cross Tonsmeire, JR.

Season Opener:
The Rebels open the 2024 season on a neutral field against non-region opponent Carver Montgomery on Thursday, August 22 at Cramton Bowl. Last year the Carver Montgomery Wolverines finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in second place in Class 6A region two. The Wolverines lost in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs to Briarwood by a score of 25-0.

Vestavia Hills and Carver Montgomery have met a total of 3 times on the football field. The Rebels have a 1-2-0 record against the Wolverines. They last met in 1981 with Carver Montgomery winning by a score of 22-21.
