2024 Preview | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Waterloo finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 0-9 record. Last year Waterloo finished eighth in Class 1A region eight with a 0-7 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Cougars lost as many games as in any season since 2015. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Waterloo averaged scoring just 11.1 points a game. The Cougars also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 49.0 points a game. The Cougars would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 4-14 record. Since 2010, Waterloo has gone a combined 44-98. Their 31.0% winning percentage ranks 45th in Class 1A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 18 seasons, Waterloo has not won much with a record of 61-117. Their 34.0% winning percentage ranks 42nd in Class 1A and 324th in the AHSAA. Coaching Change: Jeremiah Stricklin departs from Waterloo after two seasons with a record of 4-14 including 0-9 last season. 2024 Head Coach: Brad Palmer returns to Waterloo after serving as the head football coach between 2014-2019. His record stands at 27-36 with three playoff appearances. Season Outlook: The Waterloo Cougars will play in Class 1A region seven during the 2024 season. Following realignment, the Cougars remain in 1A but move from region eight over to region seven. The Cougars enter the 2024 season in the middle of a 9 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. The Cougars struggled last season finishing 0-9. Can first year head coach Brad Palmer get the team back to a place where they compete for a playoff spot in Region 7? This season, the Cougars will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region seven. After not winning a single game last year, the goal at Waterloo will be to simply win some games. Waterloo simply does not have the numbers to be competitive on the football field at this time. With just 70 students, the Cougars are one of the smallest schools playing the game and have little chance of being successful. Season Opener: The Cougars open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Tharptown on Friday, August 30 at Tharptown Stadium. Last year the Tharptown Wildcats finished with an overall record of 1-9 and in seventh place in Class 2A region eight. The Wildcats closed out the regular season with a loss to Whitesburg Christian by a score of 44-0. Waterloo and Tharptown have met a total of 12 times on the football field. The Cougars have a 7-5-0 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2017 with Waterloo winning by a score of 35-3. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
