 2024 Preview 


       Wilcox Central finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Wilcox Central finished eighth in Class 4A region one with a 0-7 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

       The Jaguars won as many games as in any season since 2017. The Jaguars have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2001 season and would love to end that streak this year. The Jaguars last playoff victory came during the 2001 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win.

       Wilcox Central struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 37.9 points a game.

       The Jaguars would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 3-16 record. Since 2010, the Wilcox Central football program has struggled with a record of 19-120.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Wilcox Central has not won much with a record of 65-188. Their 26.0% winning percentage ranks 59th in Class 3A and 365th in the AHSAA. The Jaguars have struggled on the football field with only three winning seasons during this time. Their last winning season was 2001.

Head Coach:
       The Jaguars are led by head coach Brandon Cheatham who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 2-8 record in his first season at Wilcox Central. The Jaguars saw improvement from a 1-8 record the season before coach Cheatham arrived. The Jaguars have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Cheatham.

Season Outlook:

       The Wilcox Central Jaguars will play in Class 3A region three during the 2024 season. The Jaguars may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 4A to 3A. They will compete in region three this year.

      

       The Jaguars have struggled on the football field over the past twenty years. They have averaged about one win per season over the past ten years.

    The Jaguars will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region three this season. After just 2 wins last year, Wilcox Central will be hoping to become more competitive in the region.

Players to Watch in 2024:
      QB Javion Pettway will be returning after completing 44-of-83 passes for 738 yards and 9 TDs last season. He also ran for another 506 yards and scored 9 touchdowns.

Season Opener:
       The Jaguars open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent McKenzie on Friday, August 23 at Wilcox Central Jaguars Athletic Complex. Last year the McKenzie Tigers finished with an overall record of 5-5 and in sixth place in Class 1A region two. The Tigers closed out the regular season with a loss to Elba by a score of 56-28.

       Wilcox Central and McKenzie have met a total of 5 times on the football field. The Jaguars have a 1-4-0 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2023 with McKenzie winning by a score of 47-28.
