 2024 Preview

Abbeville finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Abbeville finished seventh in Class 2A region two with a 1-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The Yellow Jackets lost as many games as in any season since 2007.

The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Abbeville averaged scoring just 12.8 points a game. The Yellow Jackets also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 37.5 points a game.

The Yellow Jackets would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 4-16 record. Since 2010, Abbeville has gone a combined 79-73. Their 52.0% winning percentage ranks 25th in Class 2A over the past fourteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Abbeville has managed to compile a record of 104-161. Their 39.0% winning percentage ranks 42nd in Class 2A and 288th in the AHSAA.

Head Coach:
The Yellow Jackets are led by head coach LaBrian Stewart who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 18-25 over the past four seasons at Abbeville. Under his direction the Yellow Jackets have qualified for the playoffs once. They have won one region crown with Coach Stewart. Over the course of his career, Coach Stewart's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times and won one region championship.

Season Outlook:

The Abbeville Yellow Jackets will play in Class 2A region two during the 2024 season.

The Yellow Jackets enter the 2024 season in the middle of a 6 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season.

Abbeville has missed the playoffs the past three seasons and a run of reaching the post season for five consecutive years. Could this be the season they get back to the post season?

The Yellow Jackets return nine players on offense who Coach Stewart consider starters from last year's squad. The defense will have five returning starters who this will be a veteran group ready to turned around the fortunes of the past three seasons in Abbeville.

Coach Stewart says ''We have tons of experience coming back and the guys have been working very hard in the off season to turn things around to Abbeville's winning ways.''

The Yellow Jackets will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region two this season. After just a single win last year, Abbeville will be hopeful of winning a few more games this season.

Returning Starters:
OFFENSE:QB- Ahmod Billins, RB- Kendrick Carter Jr., WR- Kameron Wallace, WR- Xzavier Harris, WR- Drashon Bussey, HB- Dontez Bland, C- Ra'Darion Glover, LT- Xzavion Trice, RG- Marquis Starling-Harris
DEFENSE: CB- Ahmod Billins, CB- Brian Kelly, FS- Xavier Harris, SLB- Dontez Bland, WLB- Ahmod Billins
NEWCOMERS: WR/DB- Alec Spann, DB- Jamarion Smith, LG- Kody Tharpe, RT- Randrez Harris, DE/Edge- Brandon Buck Jr.

Season Opener:
The Yellow Jackets open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Beulah on Friday, August 23 at Memorial Stadium. Last year the Beulah Bobcats finished with an overall record of 4-7 and in fourth place in Class 3A region four. The Bobcats lost in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs to Mobile Christian by a score of 52-7.

Abbeville and Beulah have met a total of 3 times on the football field. The Yellow Jackets have a 1-2-0 record against the Bobcats. They last met in 2023 with Beulah winning by a score of 35-12.
