 2024 Preview

Brantley completed the 2023 season with a 8-5 record. With their 6-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 1A region two, the Bulldogs earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Brantley lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Leroy team by a score of 40-18.

The Bulldogs lost as many games as in any season since 2016. The defense allowed a team record 351 points last season.

As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Brantley has gone a combined 142-37. Their 79.3% winning percentage ranks 3rd in Class 1A over the past fourteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Brantley has finished a combined 265-59. Their 82.0% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class 1A and 3rd in the AHSAA. The Bulldogs have been successful on the football field with twenty-four winning seasons during this time. Their last losing season was 2001.

Graduated All-State Players:
Brantley lost 1A All-State  offensive lineman Romeo Presseley to graduation. He was named to the first team last season.

Head Coach:
The Bulldogs are led by head coach Roland Jones Jr. who is entering his seventh season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 61-16 over the past six seasons at Brantley. Under his direction the Bulldogs have qualified for the playoffs a total of six times. They have won three region crowns with Coach Jones Jr.. His 144 wins rank 40th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Jones Jr.'s teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of fourteen times and won nine region championships.

Coach Jones Jr. needs six wins this season to reach the 150 win milestone.

Season Outlook:

The Brantley Bulldogs will play in Class 1A region two during the 2024 season.

The Bulldogs have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 1A. Their opponents had a combined record of 63-48 last season. That ranks 1st in Class 1A and 66th in the AHSAA.

The Bulldogs have qualified for the playoffs in each of the past 27 football seasons. Since 1982 they have only missed the post season three times. That is the sign of a winning football program.

Coach Jones stated ''We have several returning starters at skill positions, the OL is the key as we have several young guys that have to fill the shoes of the seniors that left.'' He thinks a couple of young players will make an impact for the Bulldogs this season in Tyler Carter and Michael Thompson.

Brantley will return nine starters to the offense and all eleven starters to a very good defense this season. Look for the Bulldogs to be in the thick of things this fall in 1A as they will put a veteran group of athletes on the field.

The Bulldogs are considered one of the favorites for the region two championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The Bulldogs have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 1996 and expect to be included again when November rolls around.

Players to Watch in 2024:
WR Daylan Davis will be back for his senior season after catching 26 passes for 514 yards and 9 touchdowns last year.

Returning Starters:
OFFENSE: Jayden Parks QB, Tre Pittman RB, Daylan Davis WR, Jatavis McMeans WR, Cooper Layton HB, TJ Hilliard OT, AJ Kilpatrick OG, Harper Kilcrease OT, Andre Wright TE
DEFENSE: Daylan Davis CB, Jatavis Mcmeans CB, Cooper Layton S, Tre Pittman S, Treshaun Brooks DL, Tj Hilliard DL, AJ Kilpatrick DL, Harper Kilcrease LB, Nathan Pruitt LB, Andre Wright LB, Axton Saunders LB

Season Opener:
The Bulldogs open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Luverne on Friday, August 30 at Glenn Daniel Stadium. Last year the Luverne Tigers finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in fourth place in Class 2A region three. The Tigers lost in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs to Cottonwood by a score of 26-8.

Brantley and Luverne have met a total of 91 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 32-56-3 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2023 with Luverne winning by a score of 28-14.

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

The Tuscaloosa Black Bears were considered one of the best programs in the nation from 1925-1931. Their record over that span was an amazing 61-0-3.
