 2024 Preview

Luverne completed the 2023 season with a 7-4 record. With their 4-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 2A region three, the Tigers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Luverne's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Cottonwood by a score of 26-8.

Since 2010, Luverne has gone a combined 114-50. Their 69.5% winning percentage ranks 3rd in Class 2A over the past fourteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Luverne has finished a combined 201-98. Their 67.0% winning percentage ranks 4th in Class 2A and 51st in the AHSAA. The Tigers have been successful on the football field with twenty-two winning seasons during this time.

Coaching Change:
Ed Rigby  leaves Luverne for nearby Opp shortly after the vacancy appeared in late May. His one year at Luverne produced a 7-4 record.

2024 Head Coach:
Bobby Hudson  is a former Troy Trojan football players from 2008-2010. He has served as defensive coordinator, strength & conditioning coach, special teams coordinator, linebackers coach, and secondary coach while coaching at Daphne, Greenville, Luverne, Eufaula and Briarwood Christian. Coach Hudson is a graduate of Elba High School and Troy University.

Season Outlook:

The Luverne Tigers will play in Class 2A region three during the 2024 season.

The Tigers have qualified for the playoffs in each of the past 41 football seasons. That is the state record.

Last year the Tigers jumped out to a 6-0 record but faltered the remainder of the season losing four of their last five games. Granted the schedule was a little easier near the beginning.

Luverne will return six starters on both side of the football so there will be some experienced players when the season begins on August 23rd against Elba.

First year head coach Bobby Hudson said. ''We have key pieces back and also some new faces that mesh well with the team we are trying to build. Expectations are always high at Luverne with 41 straight playoff appearances. We expect to be a very physical team that is well balanced and can perform at a high level in all three phases of the game.''

The Tigers should be in contention for a playoff spot in region three this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage. They have reached the playoffs every year since 1982 and will once again be in the hunt for a spot in 2024.

Players to Watch in 2024:
RB Tavion Rainey will be returning for his junior season after rushing for 461 yards and 5 TDs last season.

Returning Starters:
OFFENSE: Demetrious Riley (OT), Austin Jones (OT), Vincent Beasley (C), Kane Smith (QB), Tavion Rainey (RB), Elliott Harris (WR)
DEFENSE: John 'Mac' McMillan (LB), Khi Harris (LB), Alijah Hurst (DE), Tony Franklin (LB), Jackson Ballard (FS), Kameron Whatley (CB)
NEWCOMERS: Omar Crumbley (WR), Daevon Smith (DE/LB)

Season Opener:
The Tigers open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Elba on Friday, August 23 at Glenn Daniel Stadium. Last year the Elba Tigers finished with an overall record of 13-1 and in first place in Class 1A region two. The Tigers lost in the semi-finals round of the Class 1A playoffs to Leroy by a score of 27-24.

Luverne and Elba have met a total of 75 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 30-44-1 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2017 with Luverne winning by a score of 20-4.
