2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Brooks completed the 2023 season with a 8-5 record. With their 5-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 4A region seven, the Lions earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Brooks lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Westminster Christian team by a score of 48-27. The defense allowed a team record 463 points last season. The high-scoring Brooks offense ranked 30th in the AHSAA. They averaged 40.0 points a game. Brooks had a very good offense last year, scoring 40.0 points per game, but it couldn't keep up with a defense that gave up 35.6 points per game. Since 2010, Brooks has gone a combined 110-51. Their 68.3% winning percentage ranks 10th in Class 4A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Brooks has finished a combined 211-82. Their 72.0% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class 4A and 28th in the AHSAA. The Lions have been successful on the football field with twenty-five winning seasons during this time. Their last losing season was 1998. Graduated All-State Players: Brooks lost 4A All-State athlete Noah Gregg to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating was teammate offensive lineman Carson Wheeler. Head Coach: The Lions are led by head coach Tim Bowens who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 14-9 over the past two seasons at Brooks. Under his direction the Lions have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Bowens. Over the course of his career, Coach Bowens' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times . Season Outlook: The Brooks Lions will play in Class 4A region seven during the 2024 season. The Lions have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 4A. Their opponents had a combined record of 63-49 last season. That ranks 7th in Class 4A and 79th in the AHSAA. The Lions will need to replace thousand yard rusher Noah Gregg but most of the skilled players on offense will be returning for the 2024 football season at Brooks. Quarterback Garrett Burroughs is a dynamic player who will once again lead the offense onto the field this season. The offense can score a ton of points as they demonstrated last season but for the Lions to be a serious threat in 4A the defense will need to step up and slow down some of the potent offense in North Alabama. While the offense scored 520 points last year the defense allowed 463 including over forty in four of the last five games. This very well could be one of the best teams in 4A north this season. They will certainly be fun to watch on offense once again. The Lions are considered one of the favorites for the region seven championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Players to Watch in 2024: QB Garrett Burrough will be returning after completing 108-of-174 passes for 1,880 yards and 17 TDs last season. He also rushed for 1,609 yards and 22 touchdowns. WR Saelor Pinegar will be returning after catching 19 passes for 419 yards and 7 TDs in 2023. LB Charlie Buttram collected 130 tackles (23 solo) and will be back for his junior season. LB Saelor Pinegar collected 119 tackles (54 solo) on defense and will be back for his senior season. OLB Lucas Oakley gathered in 96 tackles (28 solo) including 2 sacks and will also be returning. Returning Starters: RB/MLB Lucas Pinegar, RB/LB Bam Campbell, WR Slade Vandervelde, TE/MLB Braxton Johnston, DT/T Marquez Johnson, CB Brooks Moore Season Opener: The Lions open the 2024 season on the road against region opponent West Morgan on Friday, August 30 at Rebels Stadium. Last year the West Morgan Rebels finished with an overall record of 12-1 and in first place in Class 4A region seven. The Rebels lost in the quarter-finals round of the Class 4A playoffs to Cherokee County by a score of 28-27. Brooks and West Morgan have met a total of 5 times on the football field. The Lions have a 2-3-0 record against the Rebels. They last met in 2023 with West Morgan winning by a score of 83-53. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
