2024 Preview | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Clay-Chalkville completed the 2023 season with a 14-0 record. Last year Clay-Chalkville captured the region six title and a number one seed in the Class 6A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. The Cougars reeled off five straight playoff wins to claim the Class 6A State Championship by defeating Saraland at the Alabama Super Seven 31-28 in Birmingham. The Cougars hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Floyd saw improvement as they won fourteen games following a 8-2 record in 2022. The defense was very stingy last season as Clay-Chalkville ranked 18th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 11.9 points a game. Over the past two seasons the Cougars have Finished 22-2 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Clay-Chalkville has gone a combined 148-35. Their 80.9% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class 6A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Clay-Chalkville has finished a combined 234-79. Their 75.0% winning percentage ranks 4th in Class 6A and 16th in the AHSAA. The Cougars have been successful on the football field with twenty-two winning seasons during this time. Graduated All-State Players: The Cougars lost a ton of talent to graduation off the 2023 squad. Replacing these players will be a key to another successful season. Clay-Chalkville lost 6A All-State receiver Mario Craver to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating were teammates offensive lineman Shaq McRoy, linebacker DJ Barber, athlete Jaylen Mbakwe, offensive lineman Brady Phillips, defensive lineman Avion Pickett and linebacker Carlos Ivy. Coaching Change: Drew Gilmer leaves Clay-Chalkville after seven very successful seasons. His 2021 and 2023 teams finished with undefeated seasons and a state championship. Each of his teams qualified for the playoffs and all but one (2022) reached the third round of the playoffs. His 81-12 record is nothing short of amazing in his first eight seasons as a head football coach. 2024 Head Coach: Stuart Floyd quarterbacked the Clay-Chalkville to a 12-3 record and state championship in 1999, earning All-State honorable mention as a senior. He was the offensive coordinator for the Cougars from 2011 through 2016. After the 2016 football season he spent two seasons at Hewitt-Trussville before moving on to Mortimer Jordan. Floyd served as an assistant for the Blue Devils and head coach for one season in 2021 and one year as the offensive coordinator at Springville before returning to Clay-Chalkville in 2023. Season Outlook: The Clay-Chalkville Cougars will play in Class 6A region six during the 2024 season. The Cougars enter the 2024 season riding a 14 game winning streak. They have also won 12 consecutive regular season games. Clay-Chalkville has won 21 consecutive region games. They have won 6 straight games on their home turf at Cougar Stadium. What does Clay-Chalkville do for an encore after defeating what most fans thought was an unbeatable Saraland team? They repeat according to their head coach. The Cougars return six starters on offense from last season and five on defense. Coach Floyd also believes there will be a cast of newcomers to watch out for when the season begins in late August. This season the Cougars will face seven teams that qualified for the playoffs last year. A tough schedule with the likes of Hueytown, Ramsay, Thompson and Vestavia Hills dotting the non-region opponents will prepare the Cougars once again for a deep playoff run. In region play they face Oxford and Mountain Brook as the biggest threats to another region crown in 2024. Coach Floyd was brief in his comments to AHSFHS.org. He simply stated that the Cougars were ''Looking to run it back in 24''. While most teams rebuild during the off season, Clay-Chalkville has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Cougars enter the season with expectations of not only a region crown but will be contending for a trip to the state championship game. They are considered one the favorites in region six and could very well be representing the North in the Class 6A title game. The Cougars have succeeded in reaching the playoffs every year since 2011 and this year should be no exception.
