 2024 Preview 


       Cordova finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Cordova finished sixth in Class 4A region five with a 2-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

       Since 2010, Cordova has gone a combined 74-81. Their 47.7% winning percentage ranks 37th in Class 4A over the past fourteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Cordova has managed to compile a record of 152-133. Their 53.0% winning percentage ranks 29th in Class 4A and 174th in the AHSAA.

Coaching Change:
     Shane Smothers  is a veteran coach having been at six different schools over his 14 year career. His stint at Cordova lasted just three seasons as his teams finished with a combined record of 10-20 and never qualified for the playoffs. His overall record in 14 seasons as a head coach stands at 72-79 and 5-6 in the playoffs.

The Blue Devils are not accustomed to losing but have not put together a winning season since 2016 and have not won a playoff game since the 2016 football season.

2024 Head Coach:
    Brian Maner  returns to Cordova for the third time. He was the head coach there between 1993-95 and 1997-1999. His 1995 squad captured the 3A state championship. His overall record in a dozen seasons as a head coach stands at 63-68 with stints at Cordova, Thompson and Buckhorn. Coach Maner led to a state championship in 1995. Over the course of his career, Coach Maner's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times and won four region championships.

Season Outlook:

       The Cordova Blue Devils will play in Class 4A region five during the 2024 season.

      

       The Blue Devils have not made the playoffs since the 2019 football season which is their longest drought since 2002. They have also not won more games than they lost since 2015 so some rebuilding will take place over the next few seasons in hopes of getting back to the glory days some 15 years ago in Cordova.

       Coach Maner said at Media Days ''We just want to get better every day.''

    The Blue Devils will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region five this season. After just 2 wins last year, Cordova will be hoping to become more competitive in the region.

Season Opener:
       The Blue Devils open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Oakman on Thursday, August 22 at Hosea Collins Field. Last year the Oakman Wildcats finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in third place in Class 3A region five. The Wildcats lost in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs to Mars Hill by a score of 63-7.

       Cordova and Oakman have met a total of 68 times on the football field. The Blue Devils have a 46-20-2 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2023 with Oakman winning by a score of 20-9.

  


Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

In 1925 Langdale tied a record by defeating Milltown 125-0. Hamilton had set the record by thrashing Fayette 125-0 in 1915.
