 2024 Preview 


       Corner completed the 2023 season with a 10-2 record. With their 6-1 region record and a third place finish in Class 4A region five, the Yellow Jackets earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Corner reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to West Morgan by a score of 35-14.

       No team at Corner ever won more games in a season than the ten victories last year. The 467 points scored by the Yellow Jackets last year were a team record in a single season.

       Since 2010, Corner has gone a combined 76-73. Their 51.0% winning percentage ranks 22nd in Class 5A over the past fourteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Corner has managed to compile a record of 117-146. Their 44.0% winning percentage ranks 32nd in Class 5A and 239th in the AHSAA.

Graduated All-State Players:
       Corner lost 4A All-State  punter Brodie Dunlap to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating were teammates offensive lineman Kaden Willis and defensive back Jace Boyd.

Head Coach:
       The Yellow Jackets are led by head coach Trent Campbell who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 10-2 record in his first season at Corner. The Yellow Jackets saw improvement from a 8-3 record the season before coach Campbell arrived. Under his direction the Yellow Jackets have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Campbell.

Season Outlook:

       The Corner Yellow Jackets will play in Class 5A region five during the 2024 season. The Yellow Jackets move up in classification to Class 5A. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move.

       The Yellow Jackets have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 5A. Their opponents had a combined record of 72-44 last season. That ranks 9th in Class 5A and 24th in the AHSAA.

       The ten victories last season were the most in school history and second year head coach Trent Campbell will be looking to continue that success in 2024. What can Coach Campbell do for an encore this season?

    The Yellow Jackets should be in contention for a playoff spot in region five this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage.

Players to Watch in 2024:
      RB Spencer Unruh will be back for his junior season after rushing for 598 yards and 9 TDs last season.

      MLB CJ Brown collected 102 tackles (39 solo) including 7 sacks and will be back for his junior season.

      OLB Rhett Cofer collected 73 tackles (23 solo) and will be back for his junior season.

Season Opener:
       The Yellow Jackets open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Winfield on Thursday, August 22 at Estes Hudson Stadium. Last year the Winfield Pirates finished with an overall record of 10-2 and in second place in Class 3A region five. The Pirates lost in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs to Sylvania by a score of 35-10.

       Corner and Winfield have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Yellow Jackets have a 1-1-0 record against the Pirates. They last met in 1979 with Winfield winning by a score of 59-14.

  


Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

The first night game played between high school teams in the state occurred on September 23, 1927 when Pike Road and Cloverdale met in the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery.
