 2024 Preview

Foley completed the 2023 season with a 5-5 record. Last year Foley just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 7A region one with a 2-4 region record.

The defense allowed a team record 366 points last season.

Foley had a very good offense last year, scoring 32.3 points per game, but it couldn't keep up with a defense that gave up 36.6 points per game.

Since 2010, Foley has gone a combined 74-77. Their 49.0% winning percentage ranks 21st in Class 7A over the past fourteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Foley has managed to compile a record of 131-137. Their 49.0% winning percentage ranks 22nd in Class 7A and 215th in the AHSAA.

Graduated All-State Players:
Foley lost 7A All-State  running back Kolton Nero to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating were teammates receiver Perry Thompson and offensive lineman Logan Joellenbeck.

Head Coach:
The Lions are led by head coach Deric Scott who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 19-21 over the past four seasons at Foley. Under his direction the Lions have qualified for the playoffs once. They have won one region crown with Coach Scott. Over the course of his career, Coach Scott's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of six times and won four region championships.

Season Outlook:

The Foley Lions will play in Class 7A region one during the 2024 season.

Foley finished a disappointing 5-5 last season and missed the playoffs. A very weak non-region schedule may produce more victories but will do little to prepare the team for the playoffs if they get there.

An experienced returning quarterback should help the offense but the loss of three key players on offense will leave voids that need to be filled. Kolton Nero and Perry Thompson will be difficult to replace.

The Lions have not won more than seven games in a season since 2014.

The Lions could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region one this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Foley came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year.

Players to Watch in 2024:
Nelson Thompson will return at QB in 2024 after completing 122-of-197 passes for 1,441 yards and 12 TDs last season as a sophomore.

Returning Starters:
QB Nelson Thompson, OL Seth Hartleroad, WR Shaborn Oakes, DB Jaylon Domingue

Season Opener:
The Lions open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Baldwin County on Friday, August 23 at Simmons Field. Last year the Baldwin County Tigers finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in eighth place in Class 6A region one. The Tigers ended last season on a positive note with a win over Robertsdale by a score of 43-13 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

Foley and Baldwin County have met a total of 95 times on the football field. The Lions have a 53-39-3 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2023 with Foley winning by a score of 37-24.
