2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Gaston finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Gaston finished seventh in Class 2A region six with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Gaston was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Bulldogs want to be competitive. They only averaged 15.3 points a game. Gaston struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 42.7 points a game. Since 2010, Gaston has gone a combined 48-98. Their 32.9% winning percentage ranks 46th in Class 2A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Gaston has managed to compile a record of 126-148. Their 46.0% winning percentage ranks 34th in Class 2A and 225th in the AHSAA. Coaching Change: Alan Beckett leaves Gaston after just one season and a 2-8 record. He was hired at Gaston just two weeks prior to the 2023 football season and the team struggled to field enough players but Coach Beckett righted the ship and worked to rebuild the program. The school simply wished to go in a different direction it seems. 2024 Head Coach: Derrick Sewell accepted the head coaching job at Gaston in April after moving over from West End. Sewell was the head coach at West End the last three seasons going 16-16 with two playoff appearances over the last two years. Before his time at West End, Sewell was the head coach at Ragland, going to the playoffs his final season there. Sewell previously was an assistant and the head baseball coach at Gaston from 2012-14, when he was starting his coaching career. Over the course of his career, Coach Sewell's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times . Season Outlook: The Gaston Bulldogs will play in Class 2A region seven during the 2024 season. Following realignment, the Bulldogs remain in 2A but move from region six over to region seven. Gaston has not qualified for the playoffs since the 2016 football season but are hoping things will turn around for the program this season. They have won just nine games in the last seven years. The Bulldogs return five starters to the offense and five on defense. Filling in the holes will be priority one for first year head coach Derrick Sewell. Devon Green and Adonis Jones will be a couple of newcomers to watch in 2024. Coach Sewell said about this year's team; ''There's a lot to be excited about for the 2024 season. There's great excitement around the program and a desire to win! It's been too long for this program, but in year one my biggest goal is to be competitive each and every week from start to finish and for these young men to learn what it takes to be successful.'' The Bulldogs will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region seven this season. After just 2 wins last year, Gaston will be hoping to become more competitive in the region. Season Opener: The Bulldogs open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Asbury on Friday, August 23 at Captain Bill Boyd Field. Last year the Asbury Rams finished with an overall record of 1-9 and in sixth place in Class 3A region seven. The Rams closed out the regular season with a loss to Woodville by a score of 51-7. Gaston and Asbury have met a total of 7 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 6-1-0 record against the Rams. They last met in 2023 with Gaston winning by a score of 34-14. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
