Holly Pond finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Holly Pond finished sixth in Class 2A region six with a 2-4 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Broncos have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2024. Holly Pond struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 37.8 points a game. The Broncos would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 2-18 record. Since 2010, the Holly Pond football program has struggled with a record of 36-108. Over the past 25 seasons, Holly Pond has not won much with a record of 88-171. Their 34.0% winning percentage ranks 51st in Class 3A and 332nd in the AHSAA. Coaching Change: Coleman Mason leaves Holly Pond after just a single season with a 2-8 record. 2024 Head Coach: Will McDaniel arrives in Holly Pond after spending the past three seasons as an assistant coach at Hanceville. He has eleven years of experience as an assistant coach and will get his first shot as a head football coach in 2024. Season Outlook: The Holly Pond Broncos will play in Class 3A region eight during the 2024 season. The Broncos move up in classification to Class 3A. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move. Another coaching change at Holly Pond can not be good for the football program. It will mean they have had six different head coaches in the past six seasons. Region 8 had a total makeover during the off season. While the AHSAA not only combined Geraldine and Sylvania with Asbury and Brindlee Mountain they moved four schools up in classification from 2A to join them. Fyffe, Collinsville, Holly Pond and Whitesburg Christian will all be united in what is now Region 8. First year head coach Will McDaniel said. ''Backfield Trio of Sawyer Olinger (SR QB, 19 total TDs and over 1100 rushing yards in 2023), Zayne Faulkner (SR RB, over 1000 yards rushing in 2022), and Boston Gibbs (JR RB, over 800 rushing yards and 5 TDs ) return in force for the Broncos, who averaged 21.7 PPG in in the 2023 campaign. Paving the way for the Broncos will be four returning starters on the offensive line in Diego Arreguin (SR), Brayden Ivey (JR), Levi Kelso (SR), and Xander Grazer (SR), along with Tight End Cade Allbright (JR) and Wing Back Brody Howard (SR).'' ''Defensively, the Broncos return two-way starters Faulkner (SR LB), Gibbs (JR LB), Xander Grazer (SR DL), Allbright (JR DL), and Howard (SR LB), along with Kyrian Grazer (SR DL), Aiden Motsinger (JR LB), Conner Cothren (SR DL) and John Garcia (SR DB).'' The Broncos will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region eight this season. After just 2 wins last year, Holly Pond will be hoping to become more competitive in the region. Season Opener: The Broncos open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Appalachian on Friday, August 23 at Thomas-Michelfelder Field. Last year the Appalachian Eagles finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in fifth place in Class 1A region seven. The Eagles closed out the regular season with a loss to Southeastern by a score of 35-7. Holly Pond and Appalachian have met a total of 3 times on the football field. The Broncos have a 1-2-0 record against the Eagles. They last met in 2013 with Appalachian winning by a score of 22-20. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
