 2024 Preview

Houston Academy completed the 2023 season with a 10-2 record. With their 7-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 3A region two, the Raiders earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Houston Academy reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Mobile Christian by a score of 35-10.

The defense was very stingy last season as Houston Academy ranked 37th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 14.7 points a game.

Since 2010, Houston Academy has gone a combined 73-72. Their 50.3% winning percentage ranks 31st in Class 3A over the past fourteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Houston Academy has managed to compile a record of 160-107. Their 60.0% winning percentage ranks 15th in Class 3A and 104th in the AHSAA.

Graduated All-State Players:
Houston Academy lost 3A All-State  receiver Rod Jackson to graduation. He was named to the second team last season.

Head Coach:
The Raiders are led by head coach Eddie Brundidge who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 26-8 over the past three seasons at Houston Academy. Under his direction the Raiders have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times. They have won one region crown with Coach Brundidge. Over the course of his career, Coach Brundidge's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of six times and won one region championship.

Season Outlook:

The Houston Academy Raiders will play in Class 3A region two during the 2024 season.

Houston Academy enters the 2024 season with a string of 6 consecutive wins on their home field at Westgate Park.

The Raiders will open the 2024 football season without the services of running back Brady Whigham who graduated in the spring along with the 1,328 yards and 17 touchdowns he scored last year. The Raiders will also need to find a capable wide receiver to fill the void left by the loss of Rod Jackson to graduation. They do return quarterback Kadyn Mitchell.

Region 2 will be a little more difficult to navigate in 2024 with two teams joining after moving down from 4A during the off season. Montgomery Academy and Slocomb will join them this year. The Raiders will be fighting Trinity for that coveted region crown.

Back-to-back ten wins seasons at Houston Academy for the first time since 2006 is very promising for Coach Brundridge and the Raiders.

The Raiders are considered one of the favorites for the region two championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

Players to Watch in 2024:
QB Kadyn Mitchell will be returning for his senior season after completing 117-of-153 passes for 2,069 yards and 29 TDs last season.

Returning Starters:
RB/LB Hughes Williams, WR/CB Riggs Hickey, QB/OLB Judson Bailey, RB/LB Ty Morris, WR/CB Brayden Eubanks, TE/LB Houston Lee

Season Opener:
The Raiders open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent G.W. Long on Friday, August 23 at Rebel Stadium. Last year the G.W. Long Rebels finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in second place in Class 2A region two. The Rebels lost in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs to Goshen by a score of 61-40.

Houston Academy and G.W. Long have met a total of 47 times on the football field. The Raiders have a 23-23-1 record against the Rebels. They last met in 2021 with G.W. Long winning by a score of 21-20.
