2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Marbury finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 2-9 record. With their 2-3 region record and a third place finish in Class 5A region three, the Bulldogs earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Marbury's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Charles Henderson by a score of 64-20. Marbury was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Bulldogs want to be competitive. They only averaged 19.1 points a game. Marbury struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 40.0 points a game. Since 2010, Marbury has gone a combined 49-97. Their 33.6% winning percentage ranks 44th in Class 5A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Marbury has managed to compile a record of 107-153. Their 41.0% winning percentage ranks 38th in Class 5A and 266th in the AHSAA. Head Coach: The Bulldogs are led by head coach Houston Powell who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 2-9 record in his first season at Marbury. Under his direction the Bulldogs have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Powell. Over the course of his career, Coach Powell's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times and won one region championship. Season Outlook: The Marbury Bulldogs will play in Class 5A region four during the 2024 season. Following realignment, the Bulldogs remain in 5A but move from region three over to region four. Marbury will face six opponents that reached the playoffs last season. The Bulldogs will be without staring running back Carsyn Cobb who graduated along with the 1,725 yards and 15 touchdowns he scored last year. With the AHSAA realignment region 4 has six teams that qualified for the playoffs last year. The odd thing is that not a single one of them won a playoff game. The Bulldogs will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region four this season. After just 2 wins last year, Marbury will be hoping to become more competitive in the region. Returning Starters: WR Jeremy Baileynemard Season Opener: The Bulldogs open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Stanhope Elmore on Friday, August 23 at Foshee-Henderson Stadium. Last year the Stanhope Elmore Mustangs finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in fifth place in Class 6A region two. The Mustangs closed out the regular season with a loss to Minor by a score of 28-21. Marbury and Stanhope Elmore have met a total of 3 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 0-3-0 record against the Mustangs. They last met in 2013 with Stanhope Elmore winning by a score of 48-7. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
