2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Holtville completed the 2023 season with a 7-4 record. With their 4-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 5A region three, the Bulldogs earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Holtville's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Headland by a score of 30-20. The Bulldogs last playoff victory came during the 1993 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. Since 2010, the Holtville football program has struggled with a record of 49-98. Over the past 25 seasons, Holtville has managed to compile a record of 92-169. Their 35.0% winning percentage ranks 50th in Class 5A and 317th in the AHSAA. Coaching Change: Jason Franklin leaves Holtville after seven seasons with a 37-39 record. He led the Bulldogs to a playoff spot in each of his last six years but they failed to win a playoff game in those attempts at the post season. Over the course of his 16 years as a head football coach he has compiled a record of 71-98 with nine trips to the playoffs at Horseshoe Bend and Holtville. 2024 Head Coach: Cory Lee played football and graduated from Prattville High School. He also played college ball at Southern Illinois before returning to Prattville in 2015 as the linebacker coach. The next season he took a job as the defensive coordinator at Baldwin County for four seasons. He spent one season in the same position at Pinson Valley before returning home. This will be his first head coaching job. Season Outlook: The Holtville Bulldogs will play in Class 5A region four during the 2024 season. Following realignment, the Bulldogs remain in 5A but move from region three over to region four. Holtville will face six opponents that reached the playoffs last season. With the AHSAA realignment region 4 has six teams that qualified for the playoffs last year. The odd thing is that not a single one of them won a playoff game. The Bulldogs will face eight teams that qualified for the playoffs in 2023. Their non-region opponents include Trinity, Shelby County, Maplesville and Tallassee. The Bulldogs have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region four this season. They have qualified for the playoffs every year since 2017 and are hopeful to continue that streak in 2024. Players to Watch in 2024: QB Keiland Baker will be returning after completing 114-of-201 passes for 1,638 yards and 13 TDs last season. RB Hunter Chavis will be returning for his senior season after rushing for 614 yards and 4 TDs in 2023. Returning Starters: RB Keiland Baker, RB Daishaun Zeigler, WR Elijah Headley, WR/RB CJ Lee, RB/CB Cedrick Croskey, P/K Zack Welch Season Opener: The Bulldogs open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Trinity on Friday, August 23 at Boykin-Chapman Field. Last year the Trinity Wildcats finished with an overall record of 11-2 and in second place in Class 3A region three. The Wildcats lost in the quarter-finals round of the Class 3A playoffs to Mobile Christian by a score of 42-21. Holtville and Trinity have met a total of 5 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 0-5-0 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 1999 with Trinity winning by a score of 42-0. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
