 2024 Preview 


       McGill-Toolen completed the 2023 season with a 5-5 record. Last year McGill-Toolen just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 6A region one with a 4-4 region record.

       As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, McGill-Toolen has gone a combined 128-40. Their 76.2% winning percentage ranks 7th in Class 6A over the past fourteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, McGill-Toolen has finished a combined 215-84. Their 72.0% winning percentage ranks 10th in Class 6A and 42nd in the AHSAA. The Yellow Jackets have been successful on the football field with twenty-three winning seasons during this time.

Head Coach:
       The Yellow Jackets are led by head coach David Faulkner who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 5-5 record in his first season at McGill-Toolen. The Yellow Jackets have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Faulkner. Over the course of his career, Coach Faulkner's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of seven times and won one region championship.

Season Outlook:

       The McGill-Toolen Yellow Jackets will play in Class 6A region one during the 2024 season.

       The Yellow Jackets have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 6A. Their opponents had a combined record of 69-47 last season. That ranks 7th in Class 6A and 34th in the AHSAA.

       The Yellow Jackets missed the playoffs the past two seasons something that has not happened to them since 1998. To get back to the post season the Jackets will have to figure out a way to defeat at least one of the 'Big 4' in region one. That would be Saraland, Spanish Fort, St. Paul's and Theodore.

       The Yellow Jackets have the third most difficult schedule in 6A this season. Playing in region one is tough enough but with non-region games against 7A foes Daphne and Davidson it will be even more difficult.

       That may prove a tall task as all will be considered favorites for one of the four playoff slots in 2024.

    The Yellow Jackets could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region one this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. McGill-Toolen missed the playoffs the past couple of seasons but hope to return to the post season in 2024.

Players to Watch in 2024:
      QB Andrew Murchison will be back for his senior season after completing 108-of-186 passes for 1,369 yards and 11 TDs last season.

      Jack Lenaghan returns at RB after rushing for 440 yards as a sophomore last season. Also back will be RB Ladarien Miller for his sophomore season after rushing for 726 yards and 6 TDs last season.

Season Opener:
       The Yellow Jackets open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Daphne on Friday, August 23 at Jubilee Stadium. Last year the Daphne Trojans finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in third place in Class 7A region one. The Trojans lost in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs to Enterprise by a score of 63-28.

       McGill-Toolen and Daphne have met a total of 11 times on the football field. The Yellow Jackets have a 8-3-0 record against the Trojans. They last met in 2013 with McGill-Toolen winning by a score of 28-24.
