 2024 Preview

Moody completed the 2023 season with a 10-3 record. With their 5-1 region record and a third place finish in Class 5A region six, the Blue Devils earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Moody lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Ramsay team by a score of 40-27.

No team at Moody ever won more games in a season than the ten victories last year.

Since 2010, Moody has gone a combined 64-82. Their 43.8% winning percentage ranks 32nd in Class 5A over the past fourteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Moody has managed to compile a record of 111-152. Their 42.0% winning percentage ranks 43rd in Class 5A and 278th in the AHSAA.

Graduated All-State Players:
Moody lost 5A All-State  linebacker Zane Smith to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating was teammate receiver KD Barnes.

Head Coach:
The Blue Devils are led by head coach Jake Ganus who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 20-5 over the past two seasons at Moody. Under his direction the Blue Devils have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Ganus.

Season Outlook:

The Moody Blue Devils will play in Class 5A region six during the 2024 season.

The Blue Devils have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 5A. Their opponents had a combined record of 77-39 last season. That ranks 2nd in Class 5A and 8th in the AHSAA.

Returning starters at quarterback and wide receiver along with a stout returning cast on defense will spell trouble for the rest of 5A in the Birmingham area. In two seasons Coach Ganus has turned the Blue Devils into winners and not just players who expect to win every game but players who expect to compete for a state championship in 2024.

The Blue Devils will face eight teams that qualified for the playoffs in 2023. Their schedule is the most difficult in 5A and the second most difficult in the entire state when you weigh in the non-region games against teams from higher classifications. They open the season against Gainesville, Georgia and Josh Niblett.

They also take on 6A Oxford, 6A Helena and 7A Auburn later in the season. The Blue Devils will need to replace players at some of the skilled positions on offense but will have the offensive line back intact. On defense the front seven will be the strength of the defense with the linebackers leading the way.

The Blue Devils are considered one of the favorites for the region six championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

Players to Watch in 2024:
QB Charlie Johnston will be returning after completing 181-of-296 passes for 2,559 yards and 29 TDs last season.

WR Braden Wright will also be back for his senior season after catching 26 passes for 490 yards and 4 TDs in 2023.

Also back will be FS Kaleb Goff who collected 118 tackles (83 solo) as a junior. Also returning will be LB Ba'Roc Willis who collected 79 tackles (34 solo) and 9 sacks as a sophomore in 2023.

Returning Starters:
QB Charlie Johnston, WR Braden Wright, DB Sidney Walton, WR Josiah Dozier, DE Simon Molay, DL Cam Mallory, LB Ba'Roc Willis, LB Kaleb Guff, DB Sidney Walton, DB Kylan Baker, Punter Kaleb Goff

Season Opener:
The Blue Devils open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Gainesville GA on Thursday, August 22 at Bill Morris Stadium.

This will be the second meeting between Moody and Gainesville GA on the football field. The Blue Devils have a 0-1-0 record against Gainesville GA. They last met in with
