 2024 Preview 


       Helena completed the 2023 season with a 9-3 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 6A region three, the Huskies earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Helena reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Hillcrest Tuscaloosa by a score of 42-7.

       No team at Helena ever won more games in a season than the nine victories last year. The 416 points scored by the Huskies last year were a team record in a single season.

      

       Helena is a relatively new football program having fielded a team only ten seasons. They have managed a record of 62-47 over the past ten years.

       Over the past 10 seasons, Helena has managed to compile a record of 62-47. Their 57.0% winning percentage ranks 25th in Class 6A and 117th in the AHSAA.

Graduated All-State Players:
       Helena lost 6A All-State  running back Jordan Washington to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating was teammate linebacker Nate Thomason.

Head Coach:
       The Huskies are led by head coach Richie Busby who is entering his seventh season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 44-22 over the past six seasons at Helena. Under his direction the Huskies have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times. They have won two region crowns with Coach Busby. Over the course of his career, Coach Busby's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of nine times and won four region championships.

Season Outlook:

       The Helena Huskies will play in Class 6A region three during the 2024 season.

      

       Helena enters the 2024 season with a string of 6 consecutive wins on their home field at Husky Stadium.

       The Huskies tied the school record for wins in a season last year with nine. They set a record for most points scored in a season with 416. They started the season 8-0 before dropping three of their last four games.

       A difficult non-region schedule awaits the Huskies this year. They open the season on the road against McAdory. Later they host Moody and Oxford in the middle of the season. The addition of Spain Park to Region 3 will only make the region schedule more difficult. The Huskies will need to find a replacement for all-state running back Jordan Washington who graduated in the spring.

    The Huskies are considered one of the favorites for the region three championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

Players to Watch in 2024:
      Junior Kicker Austin Lewis was 50 of his 54 extra points while going 5-for-9 on field goals and will be returning in 2024.

Season Opener:
       The Huskies open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent McAdory on Friday, August 30 at McAdory Stadium. Last year the McAdory Yellow Jackets finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in fourth place in Class 6A region four. The Yellow Jackets lost in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs to Saraland by a score of 54-14.

       Helena and McAdory have met a total of 5 times on the football field. The Huskies have a 3-2-0 record against the Yellow Jackets. They last met in 2021 with Helena winning by a score of 41-35.
