2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Chelsea finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Chelsea finished seventh in Class 7A region three with a 1-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Chelsea was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Hornets want to be competitive. They only averaged 17.0 points a game. Chelsea struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 37.4 points a game. The Hornets would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 3-17 record. Since 2010, Chelsea has gone a combined 64-82. Their 43.8% winning percentage ranks 40th in Class 6A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Chelsea has managed to compile a record of 123-144. Their 46.0% winning percentage ranks 38th in Class 6A and 226th in the AHSAA. Graduated All-State Players: Chelsea lost 7A All-State running back Emerson Russell to graduation. He was named to the honorable mention team last season. Head Coach: The Hornets are led by head coach Todd Cassity who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 3-17 over the past two seasons at Chelsea. The Hornets have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Cassity. Over the course of his career, Coach Cassity's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of eight times . Season Outlook: The Chelsea Hornets will play in Class 6A region three during the 2024 season. The Hornets may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 7A to 6A. They will compete in region three this year. The Hornets enter the 2024 season in the middle of a 6 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. The Hornets are looking forward to the move from 7A down to 6A this season. They leave one of the toughest regions in the state to one where only two of the schools qualified for the playoffs last year (Benjamin Russell and Helena). The prospects to grab one of the four possible playoffs spots is not out of the realm of possibility for them in 2024. They will need to beat out Pelham and Chilton County to grab that fourth spot. Only two opponents on the Hornets 2024 entire schedule qualified for the playoffs last season. The Hornets will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region three this season. After just 2 wins last year, Chelsea will be hoping to become more competitive in the region. Returning Starters: QB Miller Bauman, WR Ty Handley, WR CJ Durbin, RB Chase Stracener, Ethan Prickett, John Leith Season Opener: The Hornets open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Mobile Christian on Friday, August 23 at Chelsea High School Football Stadium. Last year the Mobile Christian Leopards finished with an overall record of 15-0 and in first place in Class 3A region one. The Leopards won the Class 3A State Championship last season when they defeated Madison Academy by a score of 55-28 in the Super Seven finals in Birmingham. This will be the second meeting between Chelsea and Mobile Christian on the football field. The Hornets have a 1-0-0 record against the Leopards.
