2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Mountain Brook completed the 2023 season with a 8-4 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 6A region five, the Spartans earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Mountain Brook reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Clay-Chalkville by a score of 17-13. The Spartans lost as many games as in any season since 2017. Since 2010, Mountain Brook has gone a combined 124-48. Their 72.1% winning percentage ranks 9th in Class 6A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Mountain Brook has finished a combined 223-83. Their 73.0% winning percentage ranks 6th in Class 6A and 24th in the AHSAA. The Spartans have been successful on the football field with twenty-two winning seasons during this time. Graduated All-State Players: Mountain Brook lost 6A All-State running back Cole Gamble to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating were teammates offensive lineman Watts Alexander and linebacker William Grier McDuffie. Head Coach: The Spartans are led by head coach Chris Yeager who is entering his nineteenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 153-65 over the past eighteen seasons at Mountain Brook. Under his direction the Spartans have qualified for the playoffs a total of fourteen times. They have won three region crowns with Coach Yeager. His 178 wins rank 26th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Yeager's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of seventeen times and won four region championships. Season Outlook: The Mountain Brook Spartans will play in Class 6A region six during the 2024 season. Following realignment, the Spartans remain in 6A but move from region five over to region six. How do you replace a star like Cole Gamble? You don't. You just try and move on. That's exactly what the Spartans will be doing in 2024. Gamble rushed for over 2,000 yards last season and will be missed. But plenty of talent will be ready come August. In 2024 the Spartans will face seven teams that qualified for the playoffs last year. They open the season with three straight non-region games against Demopolis, Parker and Hueytown. Midseason they will host Homewood. All four opponents were playoff teams last year and all have quality football programs who won a combined 36 games last season. The Spartans have reached the playoff the last eight seasons and most believe that streak will continue in the future. They have also won at least eight games in each of the past eight years. The Spartans should be in contention for a playoff spot in region six this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage. They have reached the playoffs every year since 2015 and will once again be in the hunt for a spot in 2024. Returning Starters: QB Charlie Johnston, DB Mac Mandell Season Opener: The Spartans open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Demopolis on Friday, August 23 at Tiger Stadium. Last year the Demopolis Tigers finished with an overall record of 10-3 and in first place in Class 5A region three. The Tigers lost in the quarter-finals round of the Class 5A playoffs to Eufaula by a score of 20-17. This will be the second meeting between Mountain Brook and Demopolis on the football field. The Spartans have a 1-0-0 record against the Tigers. They last met in with | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
