2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Opp completed the 2023 season with a 4-7 record. With their 4-4 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 3A region two, the Bobcats earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Opp's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to St. James by a score of 41-7. Opp took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2019. Opp was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Bobcats want to be competitive. They only averaged 18.1 points a game. Since 2010, Opp has gone a combined 84-71. Their 54.2% winning percentage ranks 29th in Class 4A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Opp has managed to compile a record of 136-139. Their 50.0% winning percentage ranks 31st in Class 4A and 183rd in the AHSAA. Coaching Change: Matt Brunson leaves Opp after just one season to move back to his former school at Baker, Florida where hsi teams were very successful in the past. His only team in Opp produced a 4-7 record. 2024 Head Coach: Ed Rigby arrives in Opp as a veteran head coach in the area with hopes of reviving the football fortunes of the Bobcats. His overall record in ten seasons stands at 95-39 with eleven playoff appearances for the schools he coached. Rigby won a state championship at nearby Elba in 2015 with a 14-1 record. The win total includes 95 wins in Alabama and 53 victories from outside the state. Over the course of his career, Coach Rigby's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of eleven times and won three region championships. Coach Rigby won a state championship at Elba in 2015. If Opp can win five games this season, Coach Rigby will reach the 100 win milestone. Season Outlook: The Opp Bobcats will play in Class 4A region two during the 2024 season. The Bobcats move up in classification to Class 4A. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move. While the Opp Bobcats reached the playoffs last year they finished a disappointing 4-7. Incoming head coach Ed Rigby has a history of winning in the area and will look to quickly get the Bobcats back on the winning track this year. Only two opponents on the Bobcat's 2024 schedule qualified for the playoffs last season. In Region 2 only one team, 3A Straughn, won more games than they lost last season. This will be one wide open region race until November. The Bobcats have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region two this season. Players to Watch in 2024: RB Jaymaryon Allen will be back after rushing for 592 yards and 6 TDs last season. Returning Starters: WR/DB Damirian Thompson, FB/DL Landon Langley, OL/DL Javion Stoudemire Season Opener: The Bobcats open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Northview FL on Friday, August 30 at Channell Lee Field.
