2024 Preview | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Pike County completed the 2023 season with a 4-5 record. Last year Pike County just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 3A region two with a 4-4 region record. Since 2010, Pike County has gone a combined 87-64. Their 57.6% winning percentage ranks 18th in Class 4A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Pike County has finished a combined 200-92. Their 68.0% winning percentage ranks 9th in Class 4A and 52nd in the AHSAA. The Bulldogs have been successful on the football field with twenty-one winning seasons during this time. Head Coach: The Bulldogs are led by head coach Mark Hurt who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 12-9 over the past two seasons at Pike County. Under his direction the Bulldogs have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Hurt. Over the course of his career, Coach Hurt's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times and won one region championship. Season Outlook: The Pike County Bulldogs will play in Class 4A region two during the 2024 season. The Bulldogs move up in classification to Class 4A. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move. The Bulldogs missed out on the playoffs last year but have a better shot this season with the realignment of Region 2. Only two current teams this season qualified for the playoffs in 2023. That alone will give them a better chance. Only one team finished last season with a winning record. After making the playoffs eight consecutive seasons the Bulldogs have not reached the post season in two of the last three years. While the defense was improved in 2023 the offense faltered in a few games getting shutout against Houston Academy and Headland the two best teams in Region 2. But this year they are both no longer in Region 2 as Pike County moved up to 4A over the winter. The Bulldogs will be a much more experienced team in 2024 with twenty seniors on the squad. That should equate to more victories this season and a return trip to the playoffs. The Bulldogs have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region two this season. Pike County came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year. Season Opener: The Bulldogs open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Charles Henderson on Friday, August 23 at Memorial Stadium. Last year the Charles Henderson Trojans finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in second place in Class 5A region two. The Trojans lost in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs to Gulf Shores by a score of 41-0. Pike County and Charles Henderson have met a total of 41 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 12-29-0 record against the Trojans. They last met in 1999 with Pike County winning by a score of 14-12. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
