2024 Preview | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Thompson completed the 2023 season with a 11-2 record. Last year Thompson captured the region three title and a number one seed in the Class 7A playoffs. They finished region play with a 7-0 record. The Warriors won three consecutive playoff games to reach the Class 7A State Championship game in 2023 only to fall just short of claiming a title. They were defeated by Central Phenix City at the Alabama Super Seven 21-19 in Birmingham. The defense was very stingy last season as Thompson ranked 16th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 11.0 points a game. Over the past two seasons the Warriors have Finished 22-5 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, Thompson has gone a combined 104-60. Their 63.4% winning percentage ranks 9th in Class 7A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Thompson has managed to compile a record of 158-120. Their 57.0% winning percentage ranks 16th in Class 7A and 131st in the AHSAA. Graduated All-State Players: Thompson lost 7A All-State offensive lineman KC Walters to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating were teammates defensive back Kaleb Harris, linebacker Tyler Hicks and linebacker Jayden Davis. Head Coach: The Warriors are led by head coach Mark Freeman who is entering his tenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 94-20 over the past nine seasons at Thompson. Under his direction the Warriors have qualified for the playoffs a total of seven times. They have won four region crowns with Coach Freeman. Coach Freeman has won four state championships at Thompson, the last coming in 2022. His 258 wins rank 9th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Freeman's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty-two times and won thirteen region championships. He has a 57-12 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches. Coach Freeman won six state championships prior to arriving at Thompson, the last coming in 2013 at Spanish Fort. Season Outlook: The Thompson Warriors will play in Class 7A region three during the 2024 season. The Warriors have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 7A. Their opponents had a combined record of 74-45 last season. That ranks 6th in Class 7A and 29th in the AHSAA. The Warriors enter the 2024 season having won 8 straight region games. They have won 8 straight games on their home turf at Warriors Stadium. Anything less than a state championship in Thompson has become something of a disappointment for the Warriors. They missed out on winning their fifth consecutive title in 2023 but rest assured they will be back trying to start a new streak in 2024. The Warriors will be without thousand yard rusher AJ Green who graduated in the spring. They will return only three players on offense including QB Trent Seaborn. The Warriors will also return four starters to the defense. Hosting Grayson, Georgia should give us a good indication of just what to expect from the latest version of the Warriors. Grayson lost a lot of talent to graduation so look for this to be a competitive contest to start the season. Coach Freeman said about this year's team. ''Only seven starters back off last years team. Very young and inexperienced in key areas.'' While most teams rebuild during the off season, Thompson has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Warriors enter the season with expectations of not only a region crown but will be contending for a trip to the state championship game. They are considered one the favorites in region three and should be a team in the thick of the hunt to represent the North in the Class 7A title game. The Warriors have succeeded in reaching the playoffs every year since 2016 and this year should be no exception. Players to Watch in 2024: All-World QB Trent Seaborn will return at QB in 2024 after completing 195-of-271 passes for 2,601 yards and 27 TDs last season as a freshman. WR Colben Landrew will also return after catching 28 passes for 568 yards and scoring 13 TDs as a sophomore in 2024. The defense will be led by FS Anquon Fegans who intercepted 7 passes last year for the Warriors. Kicker John Alan McGuire was 51-55 on extra points and 6-for-10 on field goals and will be back in 2024. Returning Starters: OFFENSE: QB- Trent Seaborn; WR- Angel Jones; OL- Dylan Marquess; K/P- John McGuire DEFENSE: FS- Anquon Fegans; FS/OLB- Vini Pires; Safety- Payton Lewis; DL- Hayden McDonald NEWCOMERS: Edge- Jared Smith; DL- Nick Alston Season Opener: The Warriors open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Grayson GA on Thursday, August 22 at Warriors Stadium. This will be the second meeting between Thompson and Grayson GA on the football field. The Warriors have a 0-1-0 record against Grayson GA.
