2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Tuscaloosa County completed the 2023 season with a 5-5 record. Last year Tuscaloosa County finished sixth in Class 7A region three with a 2-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Since 2010, Tuscaloosa County has gone a combined 59-88. Their 40.1% winning percentage ranks 24th in Class 7A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Tuscaloosa County has managed to compile a record of 155-122. Their 56.0% winning percentage ranks 15th in Class 7A and 132nd in the AHSAA. Graduated All-State Players: Tuscaloosa County lost 7A All-State offensive lineman Isaac Boulger to graduation. He was named to the honorable mention team last season. Coaching Change: Adam Winegarden leaves Tuscaloosa County after just three seasons with a 12-18 record leading the football program. He accepted a job at Troy in January. His overall record as a head coach is 117-48 in fourteen seasons at Hillcrest Tuscaloosa, Fairhope, Auburn and Tuscaloosa County. 2024 Head Coach: Miles Holcomb leaves Southside Gadsden after three seasons leading the Panthers. His 2023 football team finished 8-3 and tied for the region championship with Moody and Leeds. Before taking over at Southside in 2021, Holcomb served as the quarterbacks and wide receivers coach at Hoover and one year as offensive coordinator at Alpharetta High School in Georgia during the 2020 season. Holcomb graduated from Shorter University and landed his first head coaching job at Crossville for two seasons. Over the course of his career, Coach Holcomb's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times and won one region championship. Season Outlook: The Tuscaloosa County Wildcats will play in Class 7A region three during the 2024 season. The Wildcats have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 7A. Their opponents had a combined record of 65-48 last season. That ranks 7th in Class 7A and 58th in the AHSAA. The problem at Tuscaloosa County is simple. They compete in a very difficult region in the state's highest classification. The Wildcats qualified for the playoffs every year between 1996-2013 but have not reached the post seasons since. They have seen five coaches come and go during that time and will have new leadership in 2024 with Miles Holcomb moving over after a successful season at Southside Gadsden. The Wildcats could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region three this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Tuscaloosa County has failed to qualify for the playoffs since 2014 but hope to return to the post season this year. Season Opener: The Wildcats open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Central Tuscaloosa on Friday, August 23 at Wildcat Field. Last year the Central Tuscaloosa Falcons finished with an overall record of 5-5 and in fifth place in Class 6A region four. Tuscaloosa County and Central Tuscaloosa have met a total of 31 times on the football field. The Wildcats have a 16-15-0 record against the Falcons. They last met in 2023 with Tuscaloosa County winning by a score of 24-21. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
