2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
West Blocton completed the 2023 season with a 6-5 record. With their 4-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 4A region three, the Tigers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. West Blocton's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Catholic Montgomery by a score of 48-7. Since 2010, West Blocton has gone a combined 76-77. Their 49.7% winning percentage ranks 35th in Class 4A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, West Blocton has managed to compile a record of 120-146. Their 45.0% winning percentage ranks 45th in Class 4A and 235th in the AHSAA. Coaching Change: DreMail King resigned in March after leading the Tigers to back-to-back 6-5 records the past two seasons. 2024 Head Coach: Chris Wilson comes to West Blocton with eight years of experience as a head football coach at three different schools. Wilson began his coaching career at Washington County (2010-14), then Straughn (2015-16) before spending one season at Mary Montgomery (2017). His overall record stands at 65-35 over the course of his career. This past season he served as an assistant coach at Hoover. Over the course of his career, Coach Wilson's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of seven times and won two region championships. Season Outlook: The West Blocton Tigers will play in Class 4A region four during the 2024 season. Following realignment, the Tigers remain in 4A but move from region three over to region four. West Blocton will face six opponents that reached the playoffs last season. With the AHSAA realignment region 4 has six teams that qualified for the playoffs last year. Not all of those teams will make the post season this year. While the Tigers from West Blocton have qualified for the playoffs in each of the past ten football seasons they have not come away with a single playoff victory since 2014. They have also finished 6-5 the past four years. They have won between four and six games each of the past nine years. Incoming head coach Chris Wilson will be out to break that playoff losing streak in 2024. The Tigers have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region four this season. They have qualified for the playoffs every year since 2013 and are hopeful to continue that streak in 2024. MLB Robert Levi Carey collected 81 tackles (38 solo) and will be back for his junior season. Returning Starters: RB/MLB Cooper Deerman, G/DT Jamarkus ONeil Season Opener: The Tigers open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Northside on Friday, August 23 at Northside Stadium. Last year the Northside Rams finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in fifth place in Class 4A region five. The Rams closed out the regular season with a loss to Sipsey Valley by a score of 49-14. West Blocton and Northside have met a total of 39 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 23-15-1 record against the Rams. They last met in 2019 with Northside winning by a score of 50-24. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
