2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Zion Chapel completed the 2023 season with a 5-5 record. Last year Zion Chapel just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 2A region two with a 3-4 region record. The Rebels improved in 2023 with their first winning season since 2019. The Rebels last playoff victory came during the 1979 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. Since 2010, Zion Chapel has gone a combined 43-99. Their 30.3% winning percentage ranks 49th in Class 2A over the past fourteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Zion Chapel has not won much with a record of 75-179. Their 30.0% winning percentage ranks 49th in Class 2A and 357th in the AHSAA. Graduated All-State Players: Zion Chapel lost 2A All-State athlete Mason Stuart to graduation. He was named to the second team last season. Head Coach: The Rebels are led by head coach Cody Keene Jr. who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 8-12 over the past two seasons at Zion Chapel. The Rebels have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Keene Jr.. Season Outlook: The Zion Chapel Rebels will play in Class 2A region three during the 2024 season. Following realignment, the Rebels remain in 2A but move from region two over to region three. The Rebels have improved in each of the past two seasons and finished 5-5 last year. They just fell one win short of making the playoffs. Can they take that next step in 2024 and get back to the post season? It's a place they have not been since 2019. Coach Cody Keene says they will return five starters from last season on offense and five on defense. He also stated ''We have come a million miles and have a million more to go before August! We will play hard and be physical but outside of that. The rest is to be determined.'' The Rebels have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region three this season. Zion Chapel has failed to qualify for the playoffs since 2019 but hope to return to the post season this year. Players to Watch in 2024: WR Joseph LeGear will be returning for his senior season after catching 24 passes for 473 yards and one touchdown. LB Brayden Benbow had 124 tackles (79 solo) and will also be back for his senior season. Returning Starters: RB/LB John Foster Hamm, QB/LB Brayden Benbow, FB/LB Jerimiah Stinson, QB/CB Kavan Brown, TE/DE Weston Watson, DE Jackson Dowdy Season Opener: The Rebels open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Kinston on Friday, August 23 at Greene Memorial Stadium. Last year the Kinston Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in eighth place in Class 1A region two. The Bulldogs closed out the regular season with a loss to Houston County by a score of 48-25. Zion Chapel and Kinston have met a total of 48 times on the football field. The Rebels have a 26-22-0 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2021 with Kinston winning by a score of 20-12. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
