Good morning! I hope everyone is doing well on this cold Monday morning. Was thinking about this recently and just curious of what everyone's thoughts are. My cousin coaches in Louisiana and I think they do this and just wondered how you think this would work in Alabama. I know it will probably never happen, but just curious on your thoughts.
In Louisiana, they have their divisions/regions/areas...whatever you want to call it, that you play during the season. I think if you win/lose its a point system.
Not saying we do that in Alabama, but when playoffs come, they seed their teams in their class. I think the top-four get a bye.
Just curious what your thoughts would be if each class (1-6A because I know 7A does it different) if you seeded the southern part of the bracket 1-16 and the north part 1-16 and then 2 played 15 and 3 played 14 and each week you advanced that way with the top seed being the host team.
It would give your "region champ" and 1 seeds and others a reward for being the region champ. I have seen in the past a #1 seed region champ in rounds 2-3 have to go to a 2/3 seed before because they had not hosted more home games. Really the region champ is only rewarded with a FOR SURE home game in round 1 unless you meet up with someone else from your region.
Again, just getting thoughts for fun to see what everyone thinks. I know it will never happen, but we can dream up cool scenarios though.
Thanks to everyone in this group for what you do. I love reading all the forum posts and all the other things this site has! THANKS DAVID FOR ALL YOU DO FOR AHSFHS!
Have a great day and week and a happy early Thanksgiving! |

Current system is better. Ranking would be too much on record not quality of the team. Higher seated teams being the host would penalize teams in tough regions. |

Agree with Brian. The only way seeding would work is if you had an independent board that ranked teams based on how good they actually thought they were and not just "all 1 seeds are ranked in the top 4." Even then, when you're ranking teams from different areas of the state who may not have any common opponents, it's difficult to really gauge how one team may stack up against the other.
It is an interesting idea though. For instance, Oneonta, Cherokee County and Etowah, all could have been in the conversation for #1 seeds in the North this year and they're all from the same region. But again, who makes those decisions?
In Louisiana is it always just region winners that are allocated the top 4 seeds or what have you? |

In theory, I really like a rankings system. Just look at 7A. Several teams has no business being in the playoffs and some good teams stayed home. However, I think that the current system consistently provides the most opportunities to the best teams over time, even if some years the "fringe teams" are wrong; more so than area play, more so than rankings. Rankings are just so subjective and are often inaccurate. I think Ben Thomas does an exceptional job as do the local guys. However, it wouldn't be possible for them to see 150 games a week. As a result, teams that are 6-4 are better than teams that are 8-2, but the rankings don't often reflect that.
Our current system is "unfair" to 2-3 teams a year on average. I think that number goes up with any other system. |

So heres how he explained Louisiana to me:
So select means that you have either open enrollment or private. The divisions are based off total enrollment and size.
So his team was a d2 non select even though most of the schools in his region were d1 select.
Seeds are based off power points. 10 points for a win. Another point for each win your opponent has. Then another point for if the team is in a higher class. You lose you get a point for each win the opponent has. When they lost it was 8 points for his team but the team that beat they got 19 |

https://geauxpreps.com/fb-power-ratings-101/
The changes the LHSAA made to the Power Ratings formula a few years back will have coaches and fans alike wondering why your calculations do not match GeauxPreps.
The top reason for mismatches is calculating Opponents' Win points. Win Points are no longer just a straight up number of Wins by teams you have played. Points are now based on the number of wins vs number of games played. This was done to make up for playing opponents who did not play a full 10-game schedule.
See the summary below on how PR is calculated:
Result of Game: If you win, you get 10 Power Points. If you lose, you get none. Classification: If your opponent is in a higher class, you get 2 points for each class higher Opponents Wins: To calculate opponents wins: divide the number of wins by total games played, and multiple by 10. Add these three components, and this is the PR for that specific game played. Do this for all games played, add them all up, and then divide that total by the number of games you played. You can compare your calculations with ours by looking at the Team Schedules Pages, there you will see how many points we calculated for each matchup. Another major factor that causes mismatches, is Out of State opponents. We strive to make sure that we have to most accurate Win/Loss record for each out of state opponent. Since schools enter the W/L records for their OOS opponents, and because we don't know how the schools get their record, we often are off on several matchups.
In addition, a team?s strength factor shall be determined by adding the sum of the opponent?s class to the sum of the opponent?s wins and dividing the result by the total number of games played. The strength factor is used when a tie exists between two or more teams and a head-to-head matchup does not exist.

Since 4A North is the classification division I am most familiar with, I did a mock bracket based on just ranking the teams 1 through 16 based on what I thought going into the playoffs. You can decide for yourself it would have made for a more exciting bracket. This is just taking into account the teams that qualified using the region ranking system.
#1 Cherokee Co Vs. #16 Good Hope
#8 Dora Vs #9 Rogers
#5 Priceville Vs #12 Westminster Christian
#4 Oneonta Vs. #13 Corner
#6 West Morgan Vs. #11 Central Florence #3 Deshler Vs. #14 Northside
#7 Randolph Vs. #10 Haleyville
#2 Etowah Vs. #15 Madison County
A few flaws. 1.) This is obviously my opinion only. 2.) This way would have lead to two regular season rematches in the first round. Which could be good for travel mitigation, but I'd rather region foes meet further on. I suppose you could put in a provision that no team faces a region opponent in the first round. |

if travel mitigation is an issue, heres an idea that could be benefical.
For the 1st 3 rounds:
Region 1 vs 2
Region 3 vs 4
Region 5 vs 6
Region 7 vs 8
Semi final R1/2 Champ vs R 3/4 Champ
R 5/6 Champ vs R 7/8 Champ
Finals R 1/2/3/4 Champ vs R 5/6/7/8/ Champ
if that makes any sense at all.
Let me explain. For the first 3 rounds two regions will stay geographically close together.
For Example: divide the state into 4 squares. The upper right 2 regions will play together for 3 rounds. Only one winner will travel clear across the state to the upper left portion to play their champion or visa versa.
This will eliminate 2 rounds of several teams traveling at great lengths and narrow it down to solely 1 game in the north and 1 game in the south traveling significantly.
Also, it will eliminate region rematches in the semi finals all together. For example the last 6 years where Piedmont rematched with Randolph County twice followed with Wellborn then Saks, all in the semi finals. Look at Piedmonts region currently 3 teams in the qtr. finals with a realistic chance of Piedmont beating Gordo to set up another region rematch in the semi finals. This could level the playing field a little more to give other teams a chance at the semi finals.
That would sound more ideal in terms of eliminating a lot of long playoff road trips for several teams and placing it really just on 1 game (the semi finals).
Just a thought for the discussion. :)
