2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Chickasaw finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Chickasaw just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 2A region one with a 2-4 region record. The Chieftains have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2017. Chickasaw was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Chieftains want to be competitive. They only averaged 16.4 points a game. Chickasaw is a relatively new football program having fielded a team only three seasons. They have managed a record of 10-22 over the past three years. The Chieftains are led by head coach John Beverly who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 6-15 over the past two seasons at Chickasaw. Under his direction the Chieftains have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Beverly. Coach Beverly's overall record as a head football coach in five season stands at 28-27 (50.9%). Over the course of his career, Coach Beverly's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times . The Chickasaw Chieftains will play in Class 2A region one during the 2017 season. The Chieftains enter the 2017 season in the middle of a 6 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. It will be an uphill battle for the Chieftains if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region one this season. After just 2 wins last year, Chickasaw will be hoping to become more competitive in the region. Junior AJ Phillips returns after rushing for 873 yards on 122 carries and scoring 7 touchdowns. He also gained 272 yards receiving. Senior Tony Overstreet also returns after rushing for 546 yards on 90 carries and scoring 4 touchdowns. The defense returns Junior tackle Shashon Paige who registered 5 sacks last season. The Chieftains open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Williamson on Friday, September 1 at Dotson Field. Last year the Williamson Lions finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in fifth place in Class 5A region one. The Lions closed out the regular season with a loss to Mobile Christian by a score of 47-20. Chickasaw and Williamson have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Chieftains have a 0-2-0 record against the Lions. They last met in 2016 with Williamson winning by a score of 32-14. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
