2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Satsuma completed the 2016 season with a 6-5 record. With their 3-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 4A region one, the Gators earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Satsuma's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to St. James by a score of 49-21. The 315 points scored by the Gators last year were a team record in a single season. It marked the first time since the 2006 season that the Gators qualified for the playoffs. The Gators have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2017. Since 2010, Satsuma has gone a combined 24-47. Their 34.0% winning percentage ranks 47th in Class 4A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Satsuma has not won much with a record of 74-189. Their 28.0% winning percentage ranks 57th in Class 4A and 358th in the AHSAA. The Gators have struggled on the football field with only four winning seasons during this time. The Gators are led by head coach Justin Thomas who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 10-11 over the past two seasons at Satsuma. Under his direction the Gators have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Thomas. Coach Thomas' overall record as a head football coach in two season stands at 10-11 (47.6%). The Satsuma Gators will play in Class 4A region one during the 2017 season. The Gators will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region one this season. Junior Deion Pickens returns after rushing for 347 yards on 62 carries and scoring 2 touchdowns. Junior Zachary Mixon returns after rushing for 359 yards on 61 carries and scoring 1 TD. The Gators open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Cottage Hill Christian on Friday, August 25 at Kingdom Stadium. Last year the Cottage Hill Christian Warriors finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in sixth place in Class 3A region one. The Warriors ended last season on a positive note with a win over St. Lukes by a score of 41-35 after failing to gain a playoff spot. Satsuma and Cottage Hill Christian have met a total of 6 times on the football field. The Gators have a 4-2-0 record against the Warriors. They last met in 2016 with Satsuma winning by a score of 47-14. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
