2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Huntsville finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Huntsville finished seventh in Class 7A region four with a 1-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The defense allowed a team record 368 points last season. Huntsville struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 36.8 points a game. The Panthers would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 4-16 record. Since 2010, Huntsville has gone a combined 33-43. Their 43.0% winning percentage ranks 23rd in Class 7A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Huntsville has managed to compile a record of 142-129. Their 52.0% winning percentage ranks 19th in Class 7A and 168th in the AHSAA. Clint Woodfin stepped down after two years as the head coach at Huntsville. His two squads went 2-8 each year and failed to reach the playoffs. Mark Fleetwood arrives in Huntsville after spending the last six seasons at Peachtree Ridge (Ga.) where his teams went 41-27. He has also served as an assistant coach at the college level at Troy, Citadel, Chattanooga and Jacksonville State. The Huntsville Panthers will play in Class 7A region four during the 2017 season. It will be an uphill battle for the Panthers if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region four this season. After just 2 wins last year, Huntsville will be hoping to become more competitive in the region. The Panthers open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Decatur on Thursday, August 31 at Milton Frank Stadium. Last year the Decatur Red Raiders finished with an overall record of 10-2 and in second place in Class 6A region eight. The Red Raiders lost in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs to Ramsay by a score of 34-6. Huntsville and Decatur have met a total of 92 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 35-51-6 record against the Red Raiders. They last met in 2016 with Decatur winning by a score of 42-20. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
