2022 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Monroe County finished the 2021 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Monroe County finished seventh in Class 3A region three with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Tigers lost as many games as in any season since 2014. The Tigers have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2003 season and would love to end that streak this year. The Tigers last playoff victory came during the 2003 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Monroe County averaged scoring just 11.2 points a game. The Tigers also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 39.3 points a game. Since 2010, the Monroe County football program has struggled with a record of 30-89. Over the past 25 seasons, Monroe County has not won much with a record of 59-192. Their 24.0% winning percentage ranks 57th in Class 3A and 377th in the AHSAA. The Tigers have struggled on the football field with only three winning seasons during this time. The Tigers will be under the direction of new head football coach Shannon Felder as they enter the 2022 season. Coach Felder was the head football coach at Talladega last season. Coach Felder's overall record as a head football coach in sixteen season stands at 80-93 (46.2%). Over the course of his career, Coach Felder's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of ten times and won two region championships. Once again the Tigers will be rebuilding under their fifth head football coach in the last ten seasons. The Monroe County Tigers will play in Class 3A region one during the 2022 season. Following realignment, the Tigers remain in 3A but move from region three over to region one. The Tigers enter the 2022 season in the middle of a 9 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. It will be an uphill battle for the Tigers if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region one this season. After just a single win last year, Monroe County will be hopeful of winning a few more games this season. The Tigers open the 2022 season on the road against non-region opponent J.F. Shields on Friday, August 26 at Panther Field (The Pit). Last year the J.F. Shields Panthers finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in fifth place in Class 1A region three. The Panthers closed out the regular season with a loss to Red Level by a score of 49-6. Monroe County and J.F. Shields have met a total of 36 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 32-4-0 record against the Panthers. They last met in 2021 with Monroe County winning by a score of 28-0. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
