 2022 Preview

Talladega finished the 2021 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Talladega finished sixth in Class 5A region four with a 1-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The Tigers lost as many games as in any season since 2010. The defense allowed a team record 424 points last season.

Talladega was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Tigers want to be competitive. They only averaged 18.4 points a game.

Talladega struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 42.4 points a game.

The Tigers would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 4-17 record. Since 2010, Talladega has gone a combined 37-85. Their 30.3% winning percentage ranks 51st in Class 4A over the past twelve seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Talladega has not won much with a record of 58-194. Their 23.0% winning percentage ranks 60th in Class 4A and 381st in the AHSAA. The Tigers have struggled on the football field with only two winning seasons during this time.

The Tigers will be under the direction of new head football coach William F. Smith as they enter the 2022 season.  Coach Smith was the head football coach at Huffman last season.

Coach Smith's overall record as a head football coach in thirteen season stands at 77-65 (54.2%). Over the course of his career, Coach Smith's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of seven times and won one region championship.

The Talladega Tigers will play in Class 4A region four during the 2022 season. The Tigers may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 5A to 4A. They will compete in region four this year. The Tigers have one of the toughest schedules in Class 4A. Their opponents had a combined record of 66-44 last season. That ranks 8th in Class 4A and 34th in the AHSAA.

It will be an uphill battle for the Tigers if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region four this season. After just a single win last year, Talladega will be hopeful of winning a few more games this season.

The Tigers open the 2022 season on the road against non-region opponent Lincoln on Friday, August 19 at Keith Howard Memorial Stadium. Last year the Lincoln Golden Bears finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in fourth place in Class 5A region six. The Golden Bears lost in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs to Russellville by a score of 41-14.

Talladega and Lincoln have met a total of 19 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 10-9-0 record against the Golden Bears. They last met in 2019 with Lincoln winning by a score of 31-13.
