 2024 Preview

Slocomb finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Slocomb finished eighth in Class 4A region two with a 0-7 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

Slocomb took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2019. The Red Tops lost as many games as in any season since 2009.

Slocomb was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Red Tops want to be competitive. They only averaged 16.9 points a game.

Slocomb struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 36.5 points a game.

Since 2010, Slocomb has gone a combined 82-69. Their 54.3% winning percentage ranks 25th in Class 3A over the past fourteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Slocomb has managed to compile a record of 140-135. Their 51.0% winning percentage ranks 27th in Class 3A and 198th in the AHSAA.

Head Coach:
The Red Tops are led by head coach Paul McLean who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 2-8 record in his first season at Slocomb. The Red Tops have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach McLean. Over the course of his career, Coach McLean's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of one time .

Season Outlook:

The Slocomb Red Tops will play in Class 3A region two during the 2024 season. The Red Tops may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 4A to 3A. They will compete in region two this year.

The Red Tops struggled on the field last season winning just two games. It was their lowest win total since 2009. They also missed the playoffs for the second consecutive season. The road to the post season will not be any easier this year even with the drop in classification to 3A.

Slocomb finished last year with a 2-8 record. It was their worst showing since the 2009 football season. Coach McLean will be working hard this fall to improve upon that record.

This season, the Red Tops will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region two.

Players to Watch in 2024:
QB Cade Birge will be returning after completing 52-of-109 passes for 821 yards and 7 TDs last season.

RB Jayden Griffin will also be returning for his junior season after rushing for 530 yards and 4 TDs last season.

Returning Starters:
RB/FS Hayes Hatton

Season Opener:
The Red Tops open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent New Brockton on Friday, August 30 at Red Top Stadium. Last year the New Brockton Gamecocks finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in sixth place in Class 3A region two. The Gamecocks ended last season on a positive note with a win over Northside Methodist Academy by a score of 27-14 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

Slocomb and New Brockton have met a total of 7 times on the football field. The Red Tops have a 7-0-0 record against the Gamecocks. They last met in 2021 with Slocomb winning by a score of 35-7.
