 2024 Preview

Tallassee finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Tallassee finished sixth in Class 5A region four with a 0-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The Tigers lost as many games as in any season since 2003. The defense allowed a team record 397 points last season. The Tigers hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just one game which followed a 7-5 record in 2022.

Tallassee was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Tigers want to be competitive. They only averaged 17.1 points a game.

Tallassee struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 39.7 points a game.

Since 2010, Tallassee has gone a combined 91-63. Their 59.1% winning percentage ranks 16th in Class 4A over the past fourteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Tallassee has managed to compile a record of 154-120. Their 56.0% winning percentage ranks 23rd in Class 4A and 130th in the AHSAA.

Coaching Change:
Mike Battles Jr.  leaves Tallassee after a dozen seasons with a record of 78-54 and 6-8 in the playoffs. All but three of his teams posted a winning record during his tenure leading the team. His overall record is an impressive 195-109 in 27 seasons as a head football coach at Oak Grove, Bibb County and Tallassee.

His best teams were at Bibb County where the Choctaws went 46-6 in four seasons and 8-4 in the playoffs.

2024 Head Coach:
Lawrence ONeal  arrives in Tallassee after turning around a struggling football program in just three short seasons in Tuskegee at B.T. Washington. In those three years his teams set numerous team records for wins in a season with nine in 2023 and winning the first playoff game in school history in 2022.

This could be one of the best hires this off season for the Tigers. Over the course of his career, Coach ONeal's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times .

Season Outlook:

The Tallassee Tigers will play in Class 4A region three during the 2024 season. The Tigers may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 5A to 4A. They will compete in region three this year.

The Tallassee Tigers are coming off their worst season since 2003 having finished last year with a 1-9 record. But things could be looking up very soon as Lawrence O'Neal has arrived on the scene and will do whatever it takes to get the train back on the tracks as soon as possible.

Look for a marked improvement in the 2024 Tigers as they drop down to 4A this year and join Handley, St. James and B.T. Washington in a hunt for one of the four playoff spots.

QB Kevin Mason transferred from Southern Prep over the off season. Last year he threw for 3,102 yards with 43 touchdowns and rushed for another 1,369 yards and 14 touchdowns. He will be a great addition to the team this season.

The Tigers could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region three this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Tallassee came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year.

Season Opener:
The Tigers open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Montgomery Academy on Friday, August 23 at McLemore Field. Last year the Montgomery Academy Eagles finished with an overall record of 4-7 and in fourth place in Class 4A region two. The Eagles lost in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs to Bibb County by a score of 56-6.

This will be the second meeting between Tallassee and Montgomery Academy on the football field. The Tigers have a 0-1-0 record against the Eagles. They last met in with
