 2024 Preview 


       Wenonah completed the 2023 season with a 6-4 record. Last year Wenonah just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 5A region five with a 3-4 region record.

       The Dragons improved in 2023 with their first winning season since 2017. The Dragons won as many games as in any season since 2017.

       Since 2010, Wenonah has gone a combined 77-66. Their 53.8% winning percentage ranks 20th in Class 5A over the past fourteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Wenonah has managed to compile a record of 129-120. Their 52.0% winning percentage ranks 21st in Class 5A and 176th in the AHSAA.

Graduated All-State Players:
       Wenonah lost 5A All-State  athlete Anthony Young to graduation. He was named to the second team last season.

Head Coach:
       The Dragons are led by head coach Nicholas Howard who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 10-19 over the past three seasons at Wenonah. The Dragons have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Howard.

Season Outlook:

       The Wenonah Dragons will play in Class 5A region five during the 2024 season.

      

       The Dragons were right of the outside looking in when it came time for the playoffs last year. Late season losses to Fairfield and John Carroll derailed what would have been a great season for the Dragons. Coach Howard is hoping to build upon last year's success and parlay that into a playoff spot for Wenonah in 2024.

       The six victories were the most at Wenonah since they finished 10-2 in 2017 so things are looking up for the Dragons.

    The Dragons could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region five this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Unfortunately, Wenonah finds themselves in a very competitive region with other playoff quality teams. They may need to pull off an upset or two to have any chance at the postseason. Wenonah has failed to qualify for the playoffs since 2017 but hope to return to the post season this year.

DE/LB Eldridge Shelton

Season Opener:
       The Dragons open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Jackson-Olin on Friday, August 23 at J-O Field. Last year the Jackson-Olin Mustangs finished with an overall record of 0-10 and in seventh place in Class 6A region five. The Mustangs closed out the regular season with a loss to Foley by a score of 38-26.

       Wenonah and Jackson-Olin have met a total of 30 times on the football field. The Dragons have a 13-15-2 record against the Mustangs. They last met in 2021 with Jackson-Olin winning by a score of 48-7.
