2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Holtville finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Holtville finished eighth in Class 4A region three with a 0-7 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Bulldogs have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2010 season and would love to end that streak this year. The Bulldogs last playoff victory came during the 1993 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. Holtville struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 40.3 points a game. The Bulldogs would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 3-17 record. Since 2010, the Holtville football program has struggled with a record of 14-67. Over the past 25 seasons, Holtville has not won much with a record of 65-180. Their 26.0% winning percentage ranks 54th in Class 4A and 355th in the AHSAA. Their last winning season was 2010. The Bulldogs are led by head coach Jason Franklin who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 2-8 record in his first season at Holtville. The Bulldogs saw improvement from a 1-9 record the season before coach Franklin arrived. The Bulldogs have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Franklin. Coach Franklin's overall record as a head football coach in ten season stands at 36-67 (35.0%). Over the course of his career, Coach Franklin's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times . The Holtville Bulldogs will play in Class 4A region four during the 2018 season. Following realignment, the Bulldogs remain in 4A but move from region three over to region four. Overall, the region is among the weakest in the state. Qualifying for one of the playoffs spots could be a little easier. This season, the Bulldogs will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region four. The Bulldogs open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Central Coosa on Friday, August 31 at Central Stadium. Last year the Central Coosa Cougars finished with an overall record of 0-10 and in seventh place in Class 3A region three. The Cougars closed out the regular season with a loss to Childersburg by a score of 47-0. Holtville and Central Coosa have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 2-2-0 record against the Cougars. They last met in 2007 with Central Coosa winning by a score of 41-12. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
